Missed opportunity to keep something going.

I am building a social media app around movie and tv (MVP is on the way). It is an app that allows people to share their reactions to scenes and moments to movies and tv shows. It is done asynchonously so you can watch when you want to and still connect with people at those jaw dropping moments. I had developed sort of a relationship with the Found\CEO of the Startdust app (startdust.co, I loved the app BTW) because we had such synergy in how we wanted to solve the problem of watching alone. I was recently contacted to let me know that they are shutting things down. He wanted to see if I would be willing to take it over or purchase the IP. Ultimately we could not work out a deal as in the 24 hours I had to raise money to make a deal I could only come up with a deal and was told that the investors would not be able to claim the total investment as a loss as a result and that they would just let it shut down.
What are your thoughts?

I just feel like it was a real missed opportunity and felt a real connection with what they were doing and how they were going about solving the problem. I was hoping to find a way to save the app from being shut down, but was told it may not be possible. Anyway.... I appreciate any feedback.
