Hi,
PROBLEM: I have a kind of hobby (electronics, engineering) which forces me to buy and keep a big amount of various parts/components. For quite a long time a was able to remember most of what I have and where I have it. But the amount and variety of stuff kept increasing and now more and more often it is easier for me to just go to the store and buy something if I can not find that instead of wasting time trying to remember where/if I have it. Additional complication - I am a disabled person in a wheelchair which makes it more difficult/slow to move/search/organize physical things.
SOLUTION: I am developing a mobile app which would allow me to catalog all those things and the later lookup easily. I was able to find some similar apps existing already, but mine will have a unique set of features (like custom parameters of things, photos, categories, all things and locations organized in a hierarchical structure, etc.).
QUESTIONS:
Do you think I could make an additional income with this app? I assume I am not the only one having such a problem. And I am intentionally building this app generic enought so that people with other hobbies (or just having a lot of generic stuff) could use it.
If yes, then what would be the best way to monetize it? At this moment I am intending to give it for free without feature to have photos of things and to show Adds. A monthly/yearly fee would remove adds and would give some storage space for photos.
Thank you for your feedback/ideas.
Did you launch?!
not yet. but almost definitely i will.
i have reached ~90% of the development target where i could use the app myself for my own needs (this means for example there is only a single user (no registration) and some infrequently changed data has no GUI). after i finish this first target i will start making it usable by general public, which could mean almost half additional work of what i have already done.

i am still searching for monetization and marketing ideas.
Nice! Happy to hear you are nearly finished.
Btw we are launching a new podcast. I have a few founders lined up for the initial episodes. Would be such a privilege to have you on as a guest. We just want to talk about your journey in building things catalog.
We teach students how to code, launch and grow. So it would be extremely valuable for them to listen to your knowledge!
