🚀 Modern Memories - Letters written today. Delivered in the future. Now how do I get sales? Discouraged. Help!

Hi IH Fam,

We recently launched Modern Memories - Letters written today. Delivered in the future.
Modern Memories sells kits containing everything you need to write four letters which we deliver to the recipient in the future.

PLEASE HELP

The only sales I am getting is through friends and family. Do you have any other suggestions? Ads are not converting to clicks or sales. I am open to any recommendation. Or feedback. Thank you so much.

HOW DOES IT WORK

You write the letters and place them in the enclosed postage paid envelope along with the recipient information sheet. We include blank and guided stationery to help with the writing process.

Once we receive your letters, we store them safely and mail them to the recipient at designated times (currently 6 months, 1 year, 5 years and 10 years in the future). You can even add photos!

We reach out to the recipient (and writer and anyone else designated on the information sheet) before mailing out the letters to make sure we have an accurate address. We also will have a dashboard where writers can update addresses etc.

WHY WE DID THIS

People love finding old letters and notes. Especially if the writer has passed away. I want to write letters to my daughter that she receives when she is older.

WHAT IF WE FAIL?

We have already collected letters from family and friends and are personally writing letters to our daughter. If we fail, we will still send out everyone’s letters. If for some reason we cannot, we will mail back all letters. We are keeping them safe with forever stamps already placed on them.

LAUNCH INFO

We are launching with 3 kits. Each $19.99. No subscription fees or hidden charges.

Parent Kit - Geared towards parents and grandparents writing letters to their children and grandchildren

Love Kit - For romantic partners to write letter to each other

The above kits have letters delivered in 6 months, 1 year, 5 years and 10 years.

Resolution Kit - Letters written to yourself to help keep track of your goals and aspirations . Delivered in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years.

COVID

This pandemic has been incredibly isolating for families. As healthcare workers ourselves, we have felt and seen the impact of this isolation. For each purchased Modern Memories Kit, we are donating a kit to patients in the hospital.

Thanks,

Amit

My guess... Target women, try to advertise on communities where women hang out. You product has an emotional connection so I think it will work for women more.

I don’t know if it would undercut your primary sales too much but you could also offer a digital version where you send out at email instead of a physical letter for free or cheap, and then you can use the physical letter as an upsell. It may be easier to get people in the funnel or subscribed with the email version so that you’ll have a more targeted audience to pitch the more expensive product to.

I like your website. Have you tried asking friends to ask their friends?

I have. That’s how I got my first few sales. I have exhausted friends now.

I have tried approaching communities and subreddits but they all have anti-promotion rules which instantly removes my post.

This is a tricky spot to be in. Since this is a new unvalidated product, it's possible that it doesn't provide enough value and it won't sell no matter what you do.

I think sales isn't exactly what you should be chasing right now, it should be information from potential customers.

You're correct to look to communities and subreddits, but I think you're taking a wrong approach here.
Idk what communities/subreddits you're looking at but let's assume that you're going to the correct ones (i.e. the people in these communities/subreddits are much more likely to buy this product than people in all other communities/subreddits)

So, in these communities you shouldn't be promoting your product, but instead engaging in the community and more importantly DMing people or emailing them and asking to set up phone calls or some sort of communication. Then you first ask them questions about their lives and current behavior around sentimental items, family related gifts and stuff, idk the right words, but the kind of stuff related to Modern Memories. You know. And then at the end of that call you can get their feedback on Modern Memories and ask if they'd like to purchase.

This takes a lot of effort and you'll get a lot of "No"s or just people won't reply to you, but it's a numbers game, so for instance, if you reach out to 100 people you might get 10 interviews. But 10 interviews can be incredibly valuable!

If you make a lot of sales, that's great! Maybe Modern Memories has legs. But if you don't, at least you'll learn a ton, might get other related ideas and can then pivot into something that people DO want.

          Hi Adam,

Thank you so much for your insightful response.

I completely agree with you. I know what you are saying is the way to approach this. I had forgotten.

Talking to users and getting feedback is definitely the way to go.

Thank you for reminding me and for all your advice.

I definitely agree that this is an unvalidated product and therefore I am putting it out there and was hoping for click-throughs or purchases to be validation for the idea. I was being too hopeful. Gotta do things that don't scale and start interviewing potential users. Thank you!
