Monetizing SDK or how I made canva competitor without competing it

Hey. I made Polotno Studio. Polotno Studio is an almost direct competitor of very popular design editor canva.com.

I want to describe a very different monetization strategy, that I am using.

Initially, I was not thinking to make another design editor application. The market looks full to me. Instead of was working on a JavaScript framework to make such applications.

I am the maintainer of the https://konvajs.org/ 2d canvas framework. I am making graphic applications for a living. And I made many canva-like solutions for different business use cases. So I decided to make a JavaScript framework to make such applications faster. And that is how Polotno SDK was created. Polotno SDK is a paid product for developers with a B2B model.

Later I decided to make an end-user application - Polotno Studio as a full demonstration of what Polotno SDK can do.

That allows me to simplify the end-user Polotno Studio a lot. No signups, no ads, no paywalls. And that is why I am not thinking about canva.com as a competitor. Because my paid clients are very different.

Are there indie-makers who is doing anything similar?
How do you think, are there any hidden issues that can emerge with such a strategy?
