Monster thread on Selling Side Projects

There's another reason to sell your side project:

It's an easy way to land a quick contract.

After buying a project, the buyer almost always wants to continue development. If they're not technical, they'll need 10-20 hours of work to bring the product to life, and perhaps double that to have it replicate what's in their mind's eye.

I recently bought a project on IndieMaker and contracted with the developer to fix it up (http://copyprotect.io)

Total cost of the project: $100
Total cost of the development contract: $600 and counting

I never thought of it like this! Thanks for sharing that experience.

You bought that entire website for just $100 (or even $700)? Seems incredibly cheap to me. The product itself seems quite useful and is non-trivial to hack.

I can imagine quite a few use-cases for such a service.

Some great points. I've sold three of my projects in the past two years myself and from the sound of this thread, Helen is mostly used to selling more abandoned projects, rather than ones at their peak (I might be wrong, just looking at the selling reasons listed), so another word of advice: the price for those is never as high as you think it will be.

Software that is unmaintained and doesn't generate a lot of revenue is really just worth peanuts.

So if you have a project that is not matured, not making money, not getting sign-ups, basically just a pile of (basic) code, that will go for under $600-1,000 guaranteed. In return, you will have to connect with a buyer, transfer all assets, transfer server resources, do a code walkthrough, transfer accounts – it's substantial work.

Things change if you have some technology IP (my highest priced sale was a Machine Learning-powered project) or even $100 in MRR. There's something so people tend to pay more.

      What was the ML-powered project?

It was an API for communities to find toxic content for moderation (e.g. NSFW, harassment etc.). Sold it pre-release. It's not live anymore right now, but I've heard it's getting re-launched within the next weeks :)
