Moodcolor: From a personal tool to a growing space for emotional expression

A few days ago, I shared the story behind Moodcolor ↗ — a tiny tool that turns feelings into color palettes. I built it because I was tired of chasing emotions through a sea of hex codes. I just wanted to say “I feel calm” and get a palette that feels like calm.

The response surprised me. People didn’t just say “cool idea” — they shared their own moods, tested the tool, and even imagined how it could help others. One person said their sister-in-law could use it to design posts that match emotional messages. Another suggested it might help nonverbal users express themselves through color. That meant a lot.

Since then, I’ve made a few updates:

  • Gave the UI a softer, more “cozy” feel (thank you Inès for that word — it stuck with me)

  • Moved to a new domain: moodcolorlab.com ↗

  • Started working on Firebase integration to support saved palettes and mood journaling

  • Began exploring what a “Pro” version might look like (custom keywords, downloadable palettes, maybe even an API)

But more than features, I’ve been thinking about what Moodcolor could become. Not just a tool, but a space — for designers, writers, students, and anyone who thinks in feelings. A place to start with “How do I feel today?” and see where that takes you.

If you’ve tried Moodcolor, I’d love to know:

  • What would make you come back to it?

  • What would make it worth supporting?

Thanks again to everyone who’s encouraged me so far. I’m still building in public — and still listening.

It may be cooler to integrate gen AI to generate some images / artworks with the color palette.

Thanks so much — I love that idea! I’ve been thinking about how to make Moodcolor more expressive, and using generative AI to turn a palette into an actual image or artwork sounds like a beautiful next step. Imagine typing “I feel nostalgic” and getting not just colors, but a dreamy visual to match. Definitely adding this to the Pro roadmap. If you’ve seen any tools or examples that do this well, I’d love to check them out!

Your website looks so calming... I wish my mood's colors looked something like your website's homepage! lol

It was welcome and non-intrusive. Other palette maker website require you to sign-up... yours was easy to use without any unnecessary scrolling or clicking. Maybe allowing the user to generate a quick export of the Hex and Palette would be helpful for them! I can see designers and content creators using it over anything else since it's so quick and easy.

    Best of luck! Great make.

Thanks again for the kind words and the great suggestion! I’ve actually just moved Moodcolor to a new domain — https://www.moodcolorlab.com — and it already feels more aligned with the vibe I’m going for.

Since Indie Hackers doesn’t support DMs, I’d love to stay in touch more directly. If you’re open to it, feel free to drop me a quick email at jchenxi13@gmail.com or let me know yours — I’d be happy to send over a short note about how you could help shape Moodcolor as one of our early supporters.

Totally no pressure — just thought it could be fun to collaborate more closely if you’re interested. Thanks again for being part of this!

Thank you so much — that really means a lot! I’m so glad the homepage gave off a calming vibe — that’s exactly the kind of feeling I hoped Moodcolor would evoke. And I really appreciate you pointing out the ease of use. Keeping things simple and frictionless has been a big part of the design philosophy.

I love your suggestion about exporting the Hex and palette — that’s definitely something I’ve been thinking about for the Pro version. A quick, no-fuss export could make it even more useful for designers and creators. I’ll be exploring how to make that happen soon!

Thanks again for the kind words and thoughtful feedback — it truly helps shape what comes next 💛

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s tried Moodcolor moodcolorlab.com ↗so far — your feedback and encouragement have meant the world 💛

We’re still building in public, and right now we’re looking for a few angel users — people who are excited to help shape what Moodcolor becomes. If you’ve used the tool before, we’d love for you to give it another spin. Try typing a new mood, see how the palette feels, and let us know what works (or doesn’t).

Your thoughts will directly influence what we build next — from better color matching to Pro features like saved palettes, custom keywords, and journaling tools. If you’re curious, creative, or just love exploring feelings through color, we’d be honored to have you with us.

Thanks again for being part of this journey 🌈
