Moodcolor: Turning Feelings into Color

I’m not a professional designer — I’m still a student. But even in my small projects, one thing kept frustrating me: picking the right colors.

There are so many palette generators out there. Some are massive libraries, others are AI-powered. But when I sat down and thought, “I want something that feels like… calm,” I’d scroll endlessly. Blues, greens, purples — too many options, none of them quite right. It felt like I was chasing a feeling through a sea of hex codes.

And I kept wondering:
“Why can’t I just tell the computer how I feel, and let it figure out the rest?”

That’s how Moodcolor started — a tiny tool that turns mood into color.

You type in how you feel. Moodcolor gives you a palette that matches. Simple as that.
“I feel calm” → soft blues and dusty greens.
“I feel anxious” → deep reds and tense purples.
“I feel hopeful” → warm yellows and fresh greens.

At first, I built it just for myself. But the more I played with it, the more I felt like… this could be something more.

I want Moodcolor to be a space for inspiration — not just a tool, but a starting point. A place where designers, students, and anyone who thinks in feelings can explore color in a more human way. Maybe even spark new ideas just by asking: “How do I feel today?”

It’s still early. It’s still rough. But it’s live.

That's interesting. I tested several moods. The colors aren't always the ones I would have chosen, but I can see the usefulness and I'll be following your project with great interest! Wishing you continued success!

Thanks again for the kind words and the great suggestion! I’ve actually just moved Moodcolor to a new domain — https://www.moodcolorlab.com — and it already feels more aligned with the vibe I’m going for.

Since Indie Hackers doesn’t support DMs, I’d love to stay in touch more directly. If you’re open to it, feel free to drop me a quick email at jchenxi13@gmail.com or let me know yours — I’d be happy to send over a short note about how you could help shape Moodcolor as one of our early supporters.

Totally no pressure — just thought it could be fun to collaborate more closely if you’re interested. Thanks again for being part of this!

Thanks so much for trying it out, María! 🙌
Totally hear you — moods can be so personal, and we’re still working on making the matches feel more intuitive.
Would love to hear what palettes you would’ve picked — always open to feedback! 💛
And thank you again for the kind words. It means a lot!

I just tested with the sentence: I have the urge to go sailing, and it gave me back:
This palette reflects the serene and adventurous mood of sailing. The dominant sky blue (#87CEEB) represents the open ocean under a clear sky, while the soft beige (#F0EFD6) evokes sandy beaches or clouds. Deep navy blue (#3D5A80) symbolizes the sea's depth, and the warm peach tone (#FFDAB9) adds a touch of sunlight reflecting off the water. The subtle green (#006400) ties in the idea of lush landscapes near the shore.
I think it's epic! if I say: I’d love to go sailing, it gives me an entirely pink palette! ha ha ha ! :-) Don’t give up! It’s going to be amazing

Haha I love that you tried both versions — such a fun surprise! 😄
So glad the sailing palette resonated with you. And yes, the pink one is… definitely unexpected 😂
Still tuning the model, so this kind of feedback is super helpful. Thanks so much for the kind words — really appreciate the support!

Awesome idea, but i would suggest maybe look into mental health space down the line. Like idk where nonverbal people can express feelings using colors, which would really useful for people working with autistic children for example. Something to look into.

    good stuff!

you should probably move off of vercel's .app domain and buy a .com!

Thank you so much, Inès! 😊
Really happy you liked the idea — it means a lot coming from you.
If you ever give it a spin and have thoughts, I’d love to hear them!

I tried it and I think it’s a really cool tool. I can already picture my sister-in-law using it to create posts tied to the message she wants to convey. She’s super into studying colors, it’s a big deal in her job. The only thing I’d nitpick is the UI; I’d love something a bit more ‘cozy.’ Right now, the design’s pretty bare, but I guess you’ll polish it later :)

        1. 2

That’s awesome to hear — sounds like your sister-in-law would totally vibe with Moodcolor! 😄
And yes, totally agree on the UI. Right now it’s super minimal, but I’m planning to bring in more warmth and personality soon.
“Cozy” is such a perfect word for what I want it to feel like — thank you for that! Really appreciate your thoughtful feedback 🙏
