Moonscape Marketing Journal - November 2022

I'm following @yonfook's plan of one week of coding and one week of marketing. I have a head-start on the coding with an MVP version of moonscape.app already live. And now i'm integrating marketing into my schedule while I also build out the rest of the crypto tax calculation feature.

Moonscape.app is currently a micro-sass that syncs your crypto trades from Binance and Coinbase and puts them into one unified format that you can interactively search and export as a CSV. The vision is to be a fully-fledged crypto tax calculator.

What did I do in my first marketing week?

It's all in the doing.

I had to get my head around what marketing actually is. And to focus on a process and not get discouraged by weak responses. The way I see it is I'm starting from zero so I need to try many things to see what works and what doesn't.

Here's what I've tried this week:

  • Sent an email update to my newsletter subscribers. I use Revue and I think something changed with revue bc all the emails I was sending to myself went into the SPAM folder. My open rate on that email which I re-post as a blog post was 5%. Really bad.

  • Tweeted updates on the @MoonscapeHQ account. I have 461 followers on that account. I tweeted a Black Friday launch. It brought some traffic to the site but not much.

  • Spent time on twitter and managed to get over 60 likes on a tweet reply about JavaScript which I was not planning for but was a pleasant surprise.

  • Sent cold DMs to some twitter users who were engaged in UK tax thread but no response.

  • Jotted down all the things I did so that I could post this.

  • Wrote draft content for various blog/tiktok/youtube ideas

The positive response to the JavaScript tweet above gave me an idea to start a dev-focussed YouTube channel where I talk about the coding part of building Moonscape. I got my YouTube channel and OBS setup done so far and have some ideas for videos written down.

This week was tough.

Being a beginner again is humbling. I felt beat up by it all but used the weekend to recover. Rest is super important and avoiding burn-out is key 🔑.

Please share how you got started with your marketing/promotion efforts in the comments 🙏

What was it like for you? What did you struggle with the most? What tips do you have for someone just getting started? What are your main marketing channels?
