I've noticed that my posts on LinkedIn gain a lot more engagement than the equivalent tweets I make on Twitter (roughly 5 times more engagement). I have roughly the same following on both platforms (551 connections on LinkedIn and 519 followers on Twitter).
Has anyone noticed anything similar? Does anyone have tips on how to build your audience on Twitter and LinkedIn?
I want to grow my audience on both Twitter and LinkedIn in order to increase visibility in my blog articles as well as to help market my future product launches.
My LinkedIn engagement is way, way, way better than my Twitter engagement. On LinkedIn, I'm viewed as an expert in my industry. On Twitter, everybody's like, "Who is this clown?" It's an interesting dynamic, for sure!
I use LinkedIn for work stuff so I feel like I can't really promote my side project stuff without fear of alienating my professional audience or getting my company leadership upset with me. At the same time, I'm just really not having a good time on Twitter at all. Reddit was even worse!
I post my side project stuff on LinkedIn and it seems to be of interest to my network, however, I do have the concern that the higher-ups at my full-time job will not necessarily like to see me working on side projects.
I'm in the same boat, which is a shame since my Twitter presence is almost zero.
Reddit is so rough. I made the roughly the same post on IH and Reddit recently. IH was extremely warm and encouraging. Reddit had a few good replies aimed at being helpful but quite a few that were just not friendly. Have to have thick skin to post over there.
Reddit is special, people don´t hold back there and they smell a sales intention a mile against the wind. However, you get a lot of serious, high level feedback form there too, and if you post good content you get plenty of recognition. Might not be good for sales, but at least for SEO maybe
Absolutely. I got a ton of great feedback both positive and negative. It can be a really good ego check as long as you go in with the mindset that someone might rip you apart.
Same here, with answers and wishes, problems that I didn´t even considered. Reddit can help you with out of the box thinking. Trolls will be everywhere, you just have to get used to it and don´t take it personal.
Right on
The clown bit made me lol. Twitter seems to be devolving further by the day.
I find LinkedIn to be Orkut for adults. It's uninspiring.
Meanwhile, ever since I started following a bunch of Indie Hackers, my Twitter experience has been delightful!
Yes, I get this vibe sometimes from LinkedIn, but there are some people that I'm connected to that post interesting stuff.
The indie hackers you follow on Twiter, did you discover most of them on Indie Hackers?
Each platform experience is 80-90% who you follow.
100%
Too back IH doesn't have a LinkedIn icon so it's easier to follow one another.
Do you think creating a thread about it would be bad form?
I don't think so. If you don't feel comfortable with a public request like that you could message @csallen or @rosiesherry
Feel free to create a LinkedIn follow thread, not sure we've had one, I sure could do with more indie hacker connections there.
There's also a IH LinkedIn page that could do with some love :)
I personally would like this.
I have spent a lot of time building a following on Twitter (3.2K) and LinkedIn (5.5K).
TLDR: finding audience that relates to professional / business content on Twitter is close to non existent. Tweeple are looking for memes, jokes, random content.
At this point, I have concluded- Twitter seems to be a better platform to drive engagement (for existing loyal followers) rather than adoption.
Where as LinkedIN has been effective in driving adoption + engagement
Interesting observations, thanks for sharing. I personally prefer LinkedIn over Twiter because of the better engagement.
LinkedIn as a whole is just a far better platform to create content on and share it. Plenty of people with the same mindset on there, most are looking to learn or expand their knowledge. Twitter is just a shit show of bots, people screaming about their matter of fact opinions on everyday things. LinkedIn is basically a place for people who discuss and educate on key areas of business or how to improve yourself. Twitter is a one-way discussion.
Robert, I have to second that. There is almost no reaction to tweets (1680 follower) and at least sometimes a reaction on Linkedin (3300 contacts). The reply rate is extremely low, no matter how niche and relevant the post is. If you don´t already have a name it´s hard to build one.
Same for me. My linkedin has been far better than my twitter. I think it has to do with the fact that people can view your work experiences and tie that to your authority. Twitter, less so.
That said, I still enjoy being on both platforms and learning from others.
Whether those engagements actually convert to something tangible is what really matters, for some Twitter converts well, LinkedIn for others and there are several variables affecting those.
e.g. In LinkedIn, location matters a lot by design and so an entrepreneur from a village in India on LinkedIn has totally different experience from an entrepreneur in the valley. Where as in Twitter, location is irrelevant you can see someone from India who is in top 1% Kaggle having same type of audience as someone tweeting about data science from Europe or North America.
Interesting, I didn't know location played a part the algorithms for each platform, but I guess it could make sense.
I've seem surprising engagement on the stuff I've shared on LinkedIn. Nothing crazy, but more than I expected.
I have not done any real tracking or measurement if it's a worthwhile focus of one's time but it's easy enough to share a blog link and get a few clicks.
Great points and discussions. I used LI a lot more in the past (1250 followers) and just about a month ago I’ve started using Twitter (430 followers). I still get more engagement (likes and comments) on LI than Twitter but I am finding Twitter a lot more engaging and I am making a lot more meaningful connections with people I don’t know but share same interests. My Twitter feed was quite boring lately until I stopped following some folks and started following some news folks. My feed and engagement are improving every day.
I find that consistency on Twitter matters more than in LI too.
It is the same for me. LinkedIN engagement is better. I think it has to do with the fact that I'm the software developer and most of my connections are HR ladies and headhunters. If I post anything about my success or something about millenials or self improvement, those HR people catch up quickly. I'm sure there is the element of doing their work and keeping their contacts happy/engaged so they most likely put likes/comments on my post so I will see their post about a job later.
That's funny, I find that recruiters aren't interested in what I share, so interesting to see you have a different experience.
Surprisingly, I get more engagement on Twitter rather than on LinkedIn. Even though I have more connections on LinkedIn than twitter but when I posted a 'test' post, I received 1 like. Not sure why that happened but I am thinking to remove fake connections which are there..
Interesting
I've been on LI for a few years. I find twitter interactions more organic that LinkedIn
Each platform has its position I guess. I tweet multiple times a day and take a collective of those and put them on LinkedIn
I'm starting to see better engagement on Twitter and putting focus on that for the rest of the year!
I have about 1000 followers on LinkedIn but the engagement seems to really weird. Some days I can have an older post getting reactions and my new posts are not getting many views (cant figure out the algorithm). Would love some ideas on how to boost engagement, if any.
twitter is fake and shallow i think, linkedin just doesnt vibe with me lol
I'd rather say it's harder on twitter to find pockets of genuine activity. But when you do, it's a bliss !!
hahahah i have 600 fans, but only met handful good folks
Thank you for your great contribution to the discussion :D
Yeah I see that lately. I've been putting a lot of time into LinkedIn myself. Feel free to connect with me there: https://www.linkedin.com/in/renedeanda/
