To understand what's going wrong with an article I have to tell you about cows and yogurts.
Sometimes people contact me and ask me to review their articles. They all have similar issues. And a BIG problem.
It's always the same big problem.
In the last two years, I put some of my articles on the top of different places on Indie Hackers and in big subreddits with hundreds of posts every day.
Let me tell you; it's possible even if your English is not your native language (hola), and even if writing is not your thing. It's easy because most people are doing it wrong, and some are not doing it at all.
Let's talk about the cows now.
When you go to the supermarket to find a yogurt for your delicious blueberries, there are many choices. Most of them say the following:
Yogurt. Milk, lactic ferments. (if you are lucky).
Some of them even say: organic.
But there is another one that says: Our yogurt has milk from cows that graze and walk freely every day under the sun in the mountains in Galicia, Spain.
After reading that, you can see them walking and grazing in a beautiful mountain in a remote place in Spain where you have no idea where it is, because it is not Barcelona, and you don't care and will never go there but you are so happy for those cows, and you see them smiling, and you don't even know if a cow can smile, some dogs smile, so a cow maybe smiles too, you say to yourself. You can even taste the flavor of a happy smiling cow, and it tastes better. And you will not forget.
You won't forget, because nobody forgets a story.
Most of the articles I read are the first type of yogurts: milk and lactic ferments. The thing is, we all know that. Yogurts, usually, are from cow's milk and have ferments, whatever that is.
The best articles tell you a story. Stories make you feel. Feelings get into you, make you angry, sad, happy, excited, curious. They also have the milk, the lactic ferments, and a story.
Next time, when you write a new article, think about the happy cows, and tell a story.
People will never forget about you, your startup, your struggles, your success. And what's the point of writing an article if people don't feel anything. And when people feel, the writing disappears.
Nobody forgets the things that make you feel.
Like this yogurt. How can you forget about it now? You just can't. And it's just a yogurt, but it's not. It's more.
If you want more stories on how to write better, cows and yogurts, join the newsletter, I may send you something else tomorrow. It may not be about cows, but It may be about something even better. Or don't, and that's cool too, you won't hear about happy cows. And that's sad, but it's ok, sad, but ok.
Nice writeup. Coincidentally I just finished re-reading Made to Stick today (it's about how to communicate ideas in compelling ways), which ends by discussing the importance of stories:
I was on Twitter a couple hours ago and I saw a tweet that said most people live life like it’s a movie, while those who really get it know that it’s actually a video game (or something like that).
These days it’s not simply enough to tell a story for an audience to consume. They need to feel like they have been cast in it, they must become that ‘cow’ and partake in the experience of shaping the outcome. That’s the true power of the best cinema, the type that keeps people talking for years, writing reviews and “if I was X” spinoffs.
Thanks! If you read it twice, it must be excellent! I'm traveling tomorrow, so I'll get it to read on the way.
Our customers would be scared of the story. I learn mostly from many competitors who actually hide the real story. After noticing this I had to learn and why. Technology scares some people. ... Customers want to know how you solve the pain. .... And if you tell them the story about the technology they will all run away. Too many people on Indiehackers think your customer thinks like you. .... Most do not. .... Not every SaaS caters to the tech customer.
Love it!
The world would be a dark place without stories. We all live in our imagination.
Human's greatest ability is to communicate the fictional, hence stories. Without stories, there wouldn't be any civilizations, mass cooperation at large scale, businesses, economic systems, religions, ..
Stories create intrigue, forge relationships, help to raise money, close a sale, get you a date, create your personal mission,... I could go on. It's magic.
Magic. That's a word that describes it perfectly.
We think that stories are for story time and it's no. Stories are I'm everything. It's the soul of words.
