Most founders use Reddit backwards

When founders say “Reddit didn’t work for me”, what they usually mean is:

  • they wrote posts

  • shared updates

  • dropped links

…and got flagged for promotion.

I did the same at first. It barely moved anything.

This is what finally changed things around:

1) Avoid creating posts

Posting feels productive:

  • you get visibility

  • you might get upvotes

  • it feels like “marketing”

But posts are unpredictable.

They depend on:

  • timing

  • value

  • luck

One post might pop. Most disappear in hours. People view, but don't buy.

That’s not a system.

2) Posts chase attention. Replies capture intent.

The highest-intent moments on Reddit aren’t in posts you create.

They’re in posts where someone is already asking:

  • “what tool should I use for ___?”

  • “any alternatives to ___?”

  • “how are people solving ___?”

When you reply there:

  • the demand already exists

  • you don’t need to convince anyone to care

  • you’re helping, not pitching

That single reply can:

  • drive traffic today

  • start DMs

  • rank on Google weeks later

Posts rarely do all three.

3) Reddit rewards usefulness, not promotion

Reddit isn’t Twitter.

People don’t upvote:

  • announcements

  • product updates

  • links to landing pages

They upvote:

  • clear explanations

  • concrete advice

  • someone who actually answers the question

Once I optimized for being the best answer in the thread, not the loudest voice, everything changed:

  • consistent traffic

  • more signups

  • better conversations

If Reddit hasn’t worked for you yet, it’s probably not because Reddit is “saturated”.

It’s because you’re spending time broadcasting instead of showing up where intent already exists.

If you want to use the exact system I use to promote my SaaS on Reddit, check it out here.

Happy to answer questions or go deeper on any part.

Just joined Indie Hackers this week, and this post already made me pause.

I recently launched a series of AI tools for creators and tried promoting them on Reddit.
Fresh account. Link post. Flagged instantly.

What you said about replies capturing intent changed how I see it now.
Definitely rethinking my approach after reading this — thank you 🙌
