Most social apps are built around one assumption: you want to be seen. I built BudFi around the opposite idea

Quick background: I'm a solo founder who started exploring AI tools a couple of months ago by just... building things.
Not with a grand plan. Just to see what I could make.
My first few projects were unoriginal by design — a document summarizer (think poor man's NotebookLM), a YouTube video digest tool, a few other utilities. I didn't care about uniqueness. I cared about whether I could build them.
Turns out, I could. That changed something in how I think about products.

The accidental product
Somewhere in that building spree, I made a journaling app for personal use.
The problem I was solving was embarrassingly small: I can't maintain a physical journal. I wanted somewhere to log thoughts, random ideas, and daily reflections — with zero friction.
No audience. No social layer. Just a private place to think.
But then I kept adding things. A sharing toggle here. A community feed there. The ability to post images and reflections publicly — only if you wanted to.
And slowly it became a real product.

What it is now
BudFi — www.budfi.in
A platform where journaling is the core, and social is optional.

Private journaling by default
You choose what (if anything) to share publicly
Community exists, but you're never pressured to perform for it
No engagement metrics. No algorithm rewarding frequency.

The core thesis: most social platforms treat sharing as the default and privacy as the exception. BudFi flips that.

Where I'm at honestly

Solo built. Still early.
Not backed. Not viral. Just shipping.
Actively looking for feedback from people who find current social platforms exhausting but still want some form of community.

Why I'm posting here
Indiehackers tend to be thoughtful about what they build and why they build it.
I'd genuinely value feedback — brutal or otherwise — from people who care about product thinking, not just growth hacks.
If the concept resonates (or doesn't), I'd love to hear why.

I like the core idea of "private by default, social by choice" It feels like a reversal of how most social platforms work today.
One question I had while reading: what motivates users to return regularly? Journaling apps often struggle with retention because the value compounds slowly over time.
I'd be curious whether features like search, AI-powered insights, or periodic reflections become the long-term habit-forming layer.

I liked your thoughts on this. To make the users a little engaged AI power insights is there. The more logs you enter the AI will give you more insights about your behaviour. I am open for any suggestions if you have.

One thing I'd be careful with:

The interesting question may not be whether people want a more private social experience.

It may be what they're actually choosing BudFi instead of.

Those sound similar, but they can lead to very different decisions about product direction, feedback, and growth.

I wouldn't make that call casually this early.

Yeah, its very early. It will be very much interesting to see how people perceive this tool.

        Possibly.

        I'd still be careful.

A lot of products discover how people perceive them long after the founder has already started making decisions around that perception.

          Fair point, and I agree.

It’s still very early, and I’m intentionally trying not to over-assume positioning yet.

Right now, my focus is understanding what users naturally gravitate toward — private journaling, AI reflection, or community sharing.
That behavioral data will shape the product direction more than my initial assumptions.

That's the part I'd find most interesting.

Not which one users gravitate toward, but what you decide to conclude when they do.

I've seen products end up in very different places from the same early behavior.
