Music for Podcasts

Michaela @Madamdo

Hey, I'm searching for one great song for my intro and the end of the podcast. I want to buy the song, or at least be really sure I have the rights to use it. Unfortunately, it's super difficult to find songs that you can buy in a one-time manner. I do not want to use subscriptions, as I will only use one song. Most of the platforms such as Bensound.com explicitly prohibit use in podcasts. Others that claim to be free, have dubious licensing that isn't clear.

Where do you get your music from?

Various bands release their songs copyright-free on different platforms, you just need to find one that you like and fits your style. I personally get almost all of my songs from https://mp3tee.com and I like it because it's free and has very many playlists. You can take a look, maybe you'll find something on your liking, although I don't know anything about their copyright rules, or if they have some. Also, some bands would like to share their songs through a podcast because this spreads awareness of their band. A few posts on social media would help you find some volunteers I think.

There are many sites with podcast friendly licenses that allow single song purchases.

    There's a good list here:

Some totally free music for creators here:

Lots of different styles, should be able to find something you might like.

      Thank you for the tip!

I don't know if the style would fit your podcast, but Neffex is a band that releases most of their music on YouTube copyright-free, their stuff is fairly popular and well-produced and they have a lot of it.

I went through this search a long time ago, 2.5 years I believe. I remember it being very annoying. I just searched through royalty-free sites like the one you linked and listened to hundreds of songs before I found one I liked. No ideas besides that one, unfortunately. 🤷🏿‍♂️

I did at one point attempt to license a song from an artist I liked, but it turned out to be prohibitively expensive and complex.

Yeah, it really is annoying. The licensing is just not clear, and I don't want any troubles on this end. I'll just put in more time.

I shared some details of my podcast setup and how I got started in this other IH thread too.

    Intro music
    Cost: $10
    Total Time: ~7-9 hours

I used audioblocks.com to find stock audio for my show intro/outro ($10). I spent ~3-5 hours listening to hundreds of clips/tracks before discovering the one I went with called "Turn on the Funk".

I love the track, but there was a hissing sound in the background. I was going to say “eh, good enough”, but it was incredibly annoying and I am a bit of a perfectionist. I got the track cleaned up in about ~4 hours with the help of these articles:

My friend is an attorney and she read the license agreement for me, confirming that I was fine to use it in my podcast. I created a subscription for one month and then cancelled after I downloaded since I only needed the one clip. The license explicitly allows this, so no worries there.

Thank you so much for your insights. I gonna check-out the site.

If you just want one song, and you want a unique, custom one, check out https://www.marmosetmusic.com and https://www.musicbed.com. Very high-quality music there.

@csallen @rosiesherry I wonder if you can shed any light here? Perhaps one more for Courtland...

I have a friend who has a band that produces really high quality stuff. I asked him if I could use one of their songs and he just said yes. Maybe if you find a great song by a lesser-known band that sounds great, you could just approach them on a social platform and get their permission to use it in exchange for giving them credit at the end of every episode?

    1. 1

Yeah, I actually have one song I quite like, and the name of the band, but I have a hard time finding who the right contact person is...

I like your idea of approaching the bands. If it does not work out with this song, I'll try this route.

    2. 1

I'd certainly say this is a swell idea. If you have one song that you aaaabsolutely must have btw, you can usually find booking info for artists on their social media platforms, just contact that lead and ask if they could connect you to the right person.
