Just got the second sale for my niche project, BoltPatternHQ.com (a database/API for automotive wheel bolt patterns and fastener specs).
I always assumed my target audience was strictly auto repair shops, mechanics, or aftermarket retailers. But out of curiosity, I looked up the public info tied to the buyer's email. It turned out to be an LA-based veteran in the Hollywood commercial film and production industry.
Why would a film production pro need a highly specific industrial car database? A few guesses:
VFX / 3D Modeling:Â Art directors and CGI teams often need highly accurate industrial specs for commercial props or virtual car renders.
LA Car Culture:Â They might just be a hardcore hobbyist restoring a classic car in their downtime.
The Takeaway: Don't artificially limit your user persona in your head. Sometimes your B2B data has wild, long-tail use cases you'd never imagine. I just sent a friendly email asking about his use case—hoping to uncover a brand new niche!
Has anyone else found their product being used by a completely unexpected demographic?
