This is interesting but have you brought any value with this post? Sorry but I don't see any.

Maybe some insights into how communities are valued? 🤓

Me too, I don't see any value to add your Twitter post here. You can take 1 min more and post all the content here.

About the content, well, I'm happy for you to received this offer, and I like the idea behind the calculation, but it's based only on one offer. And is paid per month ant not per year. So basically, the sponsor can pay only one or 2 months, and if the sponsor doesn't see any ROI, he will stop. This method can be great, but only with many sponsors and/or time (see how long the sponsor stays)
        But anyway, good job!

Hey Tim, agreed that you cant really make a valuation from 1 sponsor.

However, I have been approached by a few additional companies about sponoring the community, so hopefully there are a few bidders when the next sponsorship window opens up 😊

Here is the whole thread if you don't want to click through to Twitter:

          My community is worth $18,000

👇 Here's the logic behind that valuation:

I've received an offer to sponsor my community for ~$600/month.
After the expenses of running the community, that comes out to about $500/month in profit.

          $500/month x 12 months = $6,000 year in profit

I don't really know what kind of multiples sponsored communities sell for, but going with 3x annual profit seems pretty reasonable to me.

          3 x $6000 = $18,000

So from a strictly financial acquisition standpoint, the community could be worth about $18,000

However, a strategic acquirer might value the community much higher, if, for example, their target customers were people in the community, and they sold a high ARPU product or service

Want to add that I have no interest in selling the community.
Just considered it an interesting thought-experiment.

Does anyone have any experience with buying or selling communities from a strictly financial acquisition standpoint?

I only know of strategic community acquisitions, such as @stripe acquiring @IndieHackers from @csallen

Here is my community, for anyone curious: www.localseocommunity.com

          @NathanLatka
Have either of you ever heard of a financial acquisition of a community? (as opposed to strategic)

      Haha if that’s a question, I wouldn’t sell it for $20k

Haha nah, just a joshin' ya. The scene in Spongebob where Patrick is arguing with a pirate ghost and the ghost says "I'll give ya 3 wishes" and Patrick says 5, ghost says 4, and Patrick says "3 take it or leave it" as if he's getting the good deal out of it.

        1. 1

Haha I got to brush up on my Spongebob 😅

Do appreciate the formula, but doing a valuation based on just 1 sponsor is not a good idea IMO :) Still, a good thought experiment.

    1. 1

Haha agreed Pete. Hopefully those sponsorships deals only get higher as the community grows 🤓

Posted a whole thread about this on Twitter, but it only shows the first tweet on here.

Awesome stuff in the thread. Congrats!
