My first app started selling

Hello fellow hackers,

Wanted to share my small victory with you.

I recently published my first Android App - Essential Alarm Clock. There must be a thousand alarm clock apps out there (if not more), but I could never find something simple, pleasing to the eye and ad-free, and so decided to build one myself.

I had to learn Android from scratch, so it took a while and was rather painful at times, but now it’s live and I even made £5 (!!!) on the day I released the Premium Upgrade feature.

Not hoping to make millions or even thousands, but the fact that someone benefits from and is happy to pay for something I created fills me with joy.

If you like me, were ever looking for a simple, elegant alarm clock, give it a try. And if you like it, drop me an email at greenwaveapps@gmail.com and I’ll send you a promo code for a free Premium Upgrade.

Any comments or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats. How did you get so many downloads?

5k is nothing! And I really have to put more effort into promoting it now. So far all I did was posting on various Android forums like XDA and Reddit’s Android communities.

I once built an alarm app as well. Ahh, the memories...

Seems there are many many more now, but you have quite a lot of downloads, unless you've published this months ago.

Ride the wave, it's a great niche and you've hit a sweet spot it seems, people are passionate about how they wake up so you might have lots of engaged users.

    Good luck.

Congrats Maksim. 5000+ downloads is a nice achievement. Did you do any marketing like social media campaigns or was it just all word of mouth?

Thank you Jim! No true social media campaigns so far. Just word of mouth and posting on various Android forums like XDA and Reddit’s Android communities.

Super cool. Usually I get discouraged by the fact that similar product exist in the market, but you made it through and even sold a premium offering. All the best for many more users to come.

Many thanks Sandesh. Do you have a similar app?

      1. 1

No, i do not have a similar app. But usually I start with something only to find someone else is doing something similar and i get discouraged :D

What do you plan next ? Market this idea or building something else ?

        1. 2

You can always take what already exists and make a better version of it. Google didn’t invent a search engine, did they? :)

Plan to do both actually. The app needs more promotion, but I don’t find that part as exciting as building something new. So started learning Laravel to build a web app next.
