Also - I can highly recommend having a group of friends help you get initial upvotes on eg. HN. I reached the bottom of the second page on HN for a short while yesterday and it gave me ~500 visitors. I think their algorithm promotes your content if you get several upvotes fast (some of the stuff on the first page only has ~5 upvotes), so getting some help sure can be useful.

Just to be clear - I never solicited any upvotes myself though.
