My monitoring script showed zero engagement — i actually had 79 notifications

i built a python script that checks every IH post for new comments and votes every 30 minutes. it ran all day sunday. every single check returned zero.

i thought nobody was reading anything.

then i logged into IH and saw 79 unread notifications. collaboration offers. landing page feedback. questions about my scraping process. real conversations.

what the script missed

  • replies to my comments on OTHER peoples posts
  • DMs and direct messages
  • profile views from people clicking my name
  • people reading posts without voting or commenting

the lesson

vanity metrics (votes, comments) are easy to track. real engagement (conversations, profile visits, DMs) is harder to measure but more valuable.

i spent 20 hours thinking nobody cared. turns out 79 people engaged enough to trigger a notification. some offered collaborations. some gave actionable feedback.

the data you track shapes your perception. track the wrong thing and you think nothing is working when it actually is.
