My random web3 project showed me a really polarized community
This year I attempted the 12 startups in 12 months thing, which I'm technically failing, but I still find incredibly useful. I just completed project 5, Toss an Eth, a donation/support platform based on Ethereum. It lets creators host their own page to accept donations from their fans and supporters in ether.
I took this on to learn more about web3 and Ethereum specifically. I'm not big into crypto, but I find the programmability of Ethereum interesting. Toss an Eth has its own custom Solidity contract to handle the funds, which was surprisingly fun to work with and not that difficult to learn compared to other languages.
One thing I've realized with this project is just how polarized the crypto community is. Everywhere I've posted about it, people seem to passionately hate the idea or believe in crypto so much that they ask to buy the project.
Has anyone else had this experience with web3? Or am I seeing this because of a poor choice of a project?
It's extremely polarized, not crypto vs. no-crypto but even within crypto where projects often feel like they're competing on a zero sum basis for alleged winner-take-all rewards.
Personally I have yet to find a compelling and legitimate use-case for any crypto, and actively counter recommend it as a development platform. It'll be interesting to see if I turn out wrong though.
You guys really dont think there is a legit use case for crypto?
very early on I felt like a true believer and had high hopes for this stuff. Read the Bitcoin whitepaper when it first came out, talked about it with friends, bought some coin in 2016/2017.
I've seen/read about too many scams and pump and dump schemes across the board now to be excited about it now :/. Still no real or good use cases, mostly just ppl who got rich and hype it as a result (most of whom were rich already).
If there was one interesting use case for this tech would be a global ledger for tracking state violence (police, courts, military, human rights abuses) because these things need to be un-censorable and the world should know/remember. Haven't seen anyone building this yet though.
Also, one good use case that can be beneficial and importnat to some (no value judgments here) is evading capital controls
Long-term you'll probably be wrong, but we're talking about 10+ years here. 😂 For now, it's not worth considering.
