As you might have heard Lemon Squeezy announced that they got acquired by Stripe. This huge shift in paradigm caught my attention because Stripe usually does not compete in this market. While Stripe processes payments, LS is a Merchant of Record. Where Stripe traditionally leaves customers to do their own compliance and tax, Lemon Squeezy (built on top of Stripe) did all those things for you.
With this new acquisition I think we're seeing Stripe becoming more aware of their broader ecosystem in which they operate. They are entering the SMEs, or IndieHackers, that are willing to sacrifice a bit of their revenue for ease-of-use.
Personally I find this an incredibly empowering investment. We see the corporate world starting to become invested in the bootstrapping community. While it is true that other companies do make use of LS, the main target audience is this global selling, quick & dirty SME.
A couple of thoughts on LS in general, which are important to realize as a hacker:
You will give quite a chunk (5% revenue, 30 cents per transaction) on a regular basis. As your sales scale you might want to consider moving to the broader Stripe ecosystem. It is unsure how they'll implement it, but I am expecting that moving away from LS to Stripe will become even easier with the acquisition.
As you scale beyond that, you might find that collections of AR become more important. Collections might not something most SaaS businesses care about, but if you're delivering a service you do have a right to get paid.
I am genuinely super excited for LS and can't wait to see how this will evolve. I hope that the acquisition will inject some resources into the company.
