Hi guys,
TLDR: I am hoping to get insights on how to structure my email list so I don't annoy my subscribers.
I have a company that sells coding courses (Dutch). We also give a free coding course that takes 6 weeks. The free course contains weekly 3-hour live stream teaching people to code for free. Every week we teach people the basics of a different programming language (Week 1/3: HTML, CSS & JavaScript, Week 4: Python, Week 5: Java, Week 6: C#). To be able to get a link to the live stream people have to sign up with their email. This has been working very nicely and the email list doubles every week. Once they sign up they get two emails on every Tuesday. One announcing the lesson for that night. And a reminder a half an hour before they start. We recently finished the first 6 weeks and have just started with the second free course. The course teaching the same concepts but they do use them to make a different end product. The problem is we do not really know who follows the live streams more than once. We have about 40 people showing up every livestream and the list is nearly at 300 subscribers.
At the moment it does not seem a problem that we send the emails twice a week to announce the lessons. As the unsubscribe rate is very low. But I can imagine that if the list keeps on growing that these emails are not very relevant for people who have been on the list for a longer time.
My first idea was to add a segment of when people sign up and then after 6 weeks stop emailing them the announcements mails. But as I don't really know if they keep on following the live streams after 6 weeks. I am not sure if that is a good idea as I might decrease the number of people that follow the live stream because they won't know that we are giving the live streams.
My question is: How would you structure the email list? And what other strategies could we use to make our emails more valuable for our subscribers.
We use Mailchimp as our email marketing software.
Emailing repeated email about same live stream would be bad idea. Draft different email with following elements.
1.) If they are struggling with topic, visit whole live stream again
2.) From your experience share where new learners make mistakes. Attend again to reinforce learning again those section with rough time estimates.
3.) Share time estimates of when you'll conduct live Q&A. They can attend and solve any questions.
For segmenting, I would suggest to ask for career goal in beginning. Is s/he learning for new job, grades in college, side project, reskilling in coding. That way, you can personalize future emails.
Regular email about asking for career update will bring good engagement.
Basic segmentation you can do with Mailchimp:
1.) Tagging people who has engaged with previous email
For an example, if you announce paid course on Advance Java. Share landing page link on email. People who have clicked on landing page link will be in high interest category. From, previous engagement of email open, or link click create new list or segment.
This is really helpful! Thank you so much.
Welcome. Please share your feedback if anything worked or not.
I've seen a list announcing that future removal with a last email about lack of engagement and a link to stay in or something, I believe they actually wanted an email back iirc
Also your links should probably mark the user with info so you can answer these questions you have
Yes, seen some of those myself. Thanks for the reply.
