Hey fellow Indie Hackers,
I'm a marketer. My team and I are working on this little passionate project called Wylo.
Wylo is an interest-based social network that lets people have meaningful conversations and make purposeful connections based on topics they love in the simplest and most effective way.
We at Wylo solve a fundamental problem: most people do not get to work on things they are passionate about. It is either due to poor exposure or ineffective networking. Upon research, we understood that if people can have a place where they can make like-minded connections while exploring their interests, they could make a living out of their passion. It was the very reason why we created Wylo.
Consider a programmer who is also a travel enthusiast, gets to meet someone similar to him or her. Wouldn’t that be nice? The only limit of the good outcomes would be how far people can go. And in this case, it could be memorable hiking on a weekend or creating the next big thing on tech with that person he or she met on Wylo.
Wylo has many topics segregated in terms of interests (example: startups) within which there are many niche communities (startups, startup doubts, co-founder search). As a user, when you sign in, you select your favorite topics, and the next moment, your newsfeed will be full of content, connection, and community suggestions relevant to your interests.
What makes Wylo unique is its organized structure (there would be no redundancy), no overwhelming hashtags, and a separate feed that lets you filter articles from mainstream media as you want. We are also working on a few exciting novel features that will be out soon. Most of all, with Wylo, we are working hard to give people a sense of real networking that is not available anywhere else.
We are a lean team of young people (also bootstrapped). Our focus is now on organic marketing. We are trying our hands at social media marketing, cold emails, and reaching out to influencers who are willing to be our early adopters and spread the word out. We have also started working on quality video content (that would have Wylo's community essence) and later convert them as audios and use them on different platforms like Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, etc. As of now, Wylo is mobile-only (both iOS and Android stores) and available only within India.
It would be helpful for us if we receive some tips and hacks on how to grow our userbase and communities. And brownie points for those who try our app and let us know your suggestions to better our product.
On a specific note, we would love to hear from you on the following.
*If you are in the B2C (Consumer internet) space, do mention the growth hacks that worked for you.
*What changes we need to employ as part of our current marketing approach?
*How to identify the best growth channel in the shortest time?
*Right now, we are targeting startups, entrepreneurship, sales, and marketing areas to grow our community. The first reason for this move is that they are our forte. And also that we can build strong communities when we target specific niches rather than spreading across a lot of topics. Hope this is a fine approach?
*On the paid marketing aspect, are Google Adwords better than Facebook and Instagram ads?
Feel free to add in more suggestions beyond these questions. We are all ears. :)
Thank you for your time and valuable tips. Have a great day ahead.
Niche down further, at least to start.
Unless it's a paid community, running ads will be cost prohibitive, so you need to tap into existing networks or create a viral growth strategy.
If you are very niched down to just a small subset of people at first, you can find where they hang out today and try to reach them there. find out what's missing from their current platforms and social media and build your tool to suit them.
Next, make it compelling for them to share your network with other connections. Social networks are hard because you have to reach a certain size in order to compete, nobody wants to be the first person on a social network. so, another strategy is to seed the community with lots of good content that you post manually or scrape from existing sources.
Thanks a lot, Karl. We're already working on a few points you have said. Especially we're keen on creating something that can give us viral growth. By the way, if you are trying out our platform, what would be a specific feature you would love to see?
I'm not your target market, just speaking from years of experience with startups doing multi-sided marketplaces.
Be careful asking people what features they want. Instead, try to get to the underlying needs and feelings they have about existing platforms. Check out The Mom Test: http://momtestbook.com/
Really good book for early stage discovery.
