So I'm thinking of building a work journal app but wanted to get some validation before I spend time building something that nobody may want.
There are obviously many general purpose journaling apps out there but none I could find that were specifically made for work.
Here are some of the differentiating features that may justify building this:
- It will be a web app at first so it can be accessed by all devices. The leader in the digital journaling space has ios, mac, and android apps. I want to make entries on my windows computer.
- Slack and email reminders.
- Groups/Teams feature that allows you to optionally share entries to a company group or team. Has the benefit of being a shared repository of knowledge and learnings.
- Custom multiple choice questions that allow you to track things over time.
- Full text history search.
- Possibly have a zapier integration to automatically create entries from other sources like Linkedin.
- A couple other features that aren't unique but I think would be important is end to end encryption and custom templates.
Is this something you would want and pay for?
If so, what features would be most important to you?
Any ideas on how to further validate this idea?
Answers to these questions or any general feedback and thoughts would be much appreciated. Happy New Year!
I love to use this kind of app. But still the question is what motivates me to keep using it over time.
I tried to do journal before. However stopped eventually after a week because of less motivation...
You need to find a Hook that makes people keep using it. If they don't stick on then they don't pay...
I have often thought there is room for improvement on these types of apps. You haven't given too much information but here are three problems to consider.
How do you minimise the time you spend tracking stuff on the platform. These platforms become heavy on admin and the level of effort can not be maintained over a long period of time.
I have used platforms like this in the past and they are great for tracking progress and what happened but they don't proactively do anything to adjust the behaviour when things are going wrong. One suggestion is that the platform can starts a proactive analysis or questioning when it sees you miss targets every week. Platform should celebrate improvements in productivity.
There is a whole generation of adults that were diagnosed with ADD and ADHD in school. When they get to the work environment, I have found they battle with a the loss of structure that is present when studying. I've often thought there is room here for a platform.
Hope it helps and I look forward to see what you come up with.
Cheers
Mark
Can you tell me a bit more about your idea? What could i write down about my work? The tasks i completed? Or the problems I found?
The things you could write about are unlimited but yes some examples would be tasks you completed, problems you solved, things that caused you stress, progress you made towards goals, interactions you had with people, ideas, compliments you received on your work, new things you learned, things that distracted you, or things out of the ordinary.
Through the custom templates feature you'd be able to setup a series different questions/prompts to elicit whatever information you want. Of course there would be some default pre made templates to help people get started.
Depending on how you keep a work journal some of the benefits to keeping one could be the following:
Hopefully I answered your question?
Hmm, really interesting. I would use it. But how is it different from other similar services? What is the usp?
