Nev Reviews Pt. 2: Share your product or landing page, and I'll give you product design advice

Hey IH,

A month ago, I offered product design advice to members of the IH community. The thread got a lot attention, which meant that I didn't get around to reviewing every submission. So, I'm back to do another batch!

So here goes round 2: share your product or landing page, and I'll give you quick, actionable suggestions on how to make it better.

I'm a product designer and developer from Ireland. I've been designing and building products for the last 10 years, the latest of which is wrap.so.

FYI, if you’d like to follow me as I build wrap.so to 1k MRR in public, I’m sharing updates and product design nuggets on Twitter.

Hey Nev! Thank you for doing this again.

My product is at https://tacodigest.com. It's a personal email digest that people can create using different sources across the web like Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, RSS etc.

I appreciate any feedback because I'm not a designer :)

Missed you last time! Here's some thoughts:

      • I really like the brand concept, but it's a little bit rough around the edges. Since you have the concept, I'd take the current taco illustration and have an illustrator (Fiverr?) redraw it for you.
      • I'd add a sticky header to persist your CTA! It'll also add some more depth to the page.
      • See if you can reduce the space beneath the 'Save Time' item. It doesn't matter if they're not the same height!
      • For the screenshot of the digest, it would be nice to present this in a mockup. Maybe lookup some iPhone device mockups online, find something simple and add the screenshot to it!
      • Other than that, nice work. Simple and fun!

Thank you for the feedback! I'll definitely consider making this changes

Hi Nev, I have just built this landing page for an AI tool I am developing that predicts how long a car will last. I am not a designer in anyway so would love any suggestions.

    Hey Nev!
I'm on an early stage of creating my product and would love to hear your feedback regarding my page https://feedbucket.io/ It's an online kudos box, aimed to foster positive feedback in remote teams.

    Hey, thanks a lot!
Just finalized my MVP landing page, seeking some feedback before launching in the next days.

    Thanks!

Good job, and best of luck with launch!

      • For your main asset, this is something that I'd love to see built with code or SVG. You could recreate the boxes in html, then add the network image as a png. Right now, the whole thing is a little pixellated. Whenever you're rendering text, it's nice to try to avoid doing so in an image format. Building out this section in code would solve this. Alternatively, export the whole thing as an SVG. That should also work.
      • Looks like you still have the Webflow favicon. That's a quick fix but good to update before launch.
      • Some spacing advice. I'd drop the margin beneath the paragraph in your hero by about 50%. Similarly for "Level up your bugs processing", I'd reduce the bottom padding here by around 50%.

      Good luck!

Thanks a lot! That's super useful!

Hey Nev 👋 I have been following you for a while now and I really love your style.

https://nevflynn.com/ has been sitting on my [not-yet-published] list of most amazing personal websites from the very beginning.

If you can take a look at my freshly launched landing page, it would make my day: https://weightless.so/

    1. 2

Hey! Thanks for the kind words! Excited to see the list whenever you launch it.

      Here's some thoughts:

      • The first thing I noticed was that the height of the page was just short of filling my viewport, leaving a little white bar at the bottom. You could stick a min-height: 100vh (or the Tailwind equivalent) on the div inside your body tag to solve this.
      • I like that you're doing the simple, 1-viewport landing page, but I was slightly confused with the form. I wasn't sure if this was an example of a waitlist, or actually the action to get started and use the product. I think it would be nice to include a stylised example (I'd like to see what this form will look like on my website), maybe showing how the form adapts to different CSS.
      • The brand is nice! I'd consider including the logo as an SVG though, it'll really make those details pop.
      • A quick win is also adding the product description to the page title: Weightless — Effortless waitlist form for your landing page
      1. 1

Thanks so much! I really appreciate this.

The form on the right is not an example but the sign up form to actually start using Weightless on your site. Guess I need to do something about this.

Also, at least for now, there's no styled form. Only a headless mode. Bring Your Own HTML, sort of. Looks like I should mention this as well.

Other feedback points going in as-is 🙌

        1. 2

          Nice!

Yeah, a good way of showing off the fact that it's headless may be a visual of a form that adopts different CSS.

I'm thinking something similar to how Tailwind toggle between 'Simple', 'Playful' etc. in one of their landing page rows and have it affect the style of the element.

Hey, thanks for the generous offer. Here's my landing page:

Hey! Nice product. Here's some thoughts:

      • I think the typing effect in your hero section is nice, but it's a little too slow. If you can speed up the type speed I think that would help.
      • I think the colour palette may need some slight tweaking. I like the blue theme, but I think it would help to have a contrasting section or two. Perhaps a white background for one or two of your rows to break up the colours.
      • In your Features grid, the cards will look better if you give them more padding and less grid-gap. I'd double the padding and half the grid-gap. I'd also half the margin-bottom on the h3.
      • To persist your sign up CTA, add a sticky header with a button that scrolls to the sign up input. Or, just add the input and button to the sticky header.

      Best of luck!

      1. 1

Thanks, Nev! I really appreciate it 😄

Hey. Nice work. Here are some first thoughts:

      • Your hero section is quite unique when compared against the typical 2022 equivalent. I'd emphasis this and try to maintain that retro holiday style throughout the page. Take a look at Poolsuite's brand, they do this really well.
      • I found the off-center text in the hero a little jarring. Perhaps you're trying to center the text about the water in the background for better contrast? But I'd just center this here.
      • In the 'find a connect' section, the placeholder images for connects that don't have a profile picture are quite pixellated. I'd bump the quality of these, and consider using a placeholder image that's unique to your business. I.e. like you have currently, but with a simple greyscale illustration of a beach in the background.
      • I'd drop the size of your icons in the how it works section by at least 50%. People tend to oversize icons like this. Also, pick a style (outlined or filled) and stick to it for your whole website.

      Good luck with it!

        Hi @NevFlynn

        Thanks the feedback.

        • I have the retro holiday style throughout the website actually
        • Did not center it simply because of the background image
        • Great call on the pixelated profile pics and the idea for greyscale a beach... NICE!!
        • Will have to be careful when shrinking it as it has some writings in it as well, point well taken.

Thanks for sharing. Here are some thoughts on your landing page:

      • You should define a colour palette, then stick to it throughout the page. This will help bring some consistency to your design. If you need to define a palette, there are plenty of tools available online, or just copy one from another website that you like.
      • The Pricing and Contact buttons are off-center in your header. I'd recommend either centering them, or move them to the right with the other two links.
      • I think the bottom hover animation where the card rotates is a little over the top. The grid looks good. So i'd just remove the animation or tone it down a little bit.
      • In your hero, I'd reduce the padding between your title, subtitle and button by about 50%.

      Good luck with it!

Very interested in hearing your feedback
    The landing page is www.myformatic.com
the app itself is https://app.myformatic.com/ but it is not actually connected to landing page yet as still in development but free to have a look

Hey! Here's some first thoughts on the landing page:

      • The first thing that jumps out is your entry animations. With animations like these, I'd recommend toning down the y translation. The subtly will make it look more professional.
      • More on animation. If you're going to fade in a section, make sure that all items have an animation property. For example, in your hero the title and button animate, but the body text doesn't which causes the title to slide over the body text.
      • In general, I think the landing page is a little too wordy. I'd break out some of that content into your about page. Smaller paragraphs will look better, and be easier to consume.
      • I think the strongest and most unique design element on the page is the curved purple background layer with the tablet mockup. If it were my landing page, I'd use this style in the hero.

      Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. Will certainly make sure I include them in my update
