I realized recently that I blog very inconsistently. Sometimes it's every few weeks and other times I go months without any new content.
I attribute this to only blogging when I feel passionate about something. A new framework comes out that I "absolutely have to try" so I'll write about it. Or, I've been playing a lot of board games and want to help folks find a new one. Or I learn "that one weird regex trick in Ruby". The list goes on!
In the past this has worked quite well. I can spend a ton of time on the post, edit it, and publish knowing it scratched my itch.
But since I've gone freelance my blog is my #1 inbound lead. So I'm leaning towards more focused and more consistent content.
I'm starting with small, simple how-to articles to get in the habit. But hoping that these become higher quality (and longer) as time goes on.
This week I'm deciding between the following topics:
When I blog I'll post an update here, every Thursday.
Has anyone tried something more regular? What helped you stay consistent and motivated?
December 3, 2020 - 3 for 3!
Today marks my third consecutive week of Thursday blogging. I wrote about something that I've been thinking on for a while but couldn't figure out the right way to get it on paper.
This week's article is Testing the UI without UI Testing in Swift. I walk through three different approaches to using XCTest instead of reaching for UI Testing.
Good luck @joemasilotti. I have been blogging every Wednesday (so I can tell everyone to subscribe to think of it as Wednesday Wisdom ;-) ). Here is what helps me:
If you do that often, it becomes a routine. By the way, my blog lives on https://jjude.com
Feel free to ask any questions.
Thanks @jjude! Next up: telling them to to look out for my post coming the next day. Just kidding :)
What do you like about Obsidian? I've been using Bear.app to do something similar. For some reason I have a mental hurdle with opening it on my phone. I'm going to try to get around that by "just doing it" more this week.
"Themed days" is a super interesting idea. I do something similar but more targeted. For example, Tuesday I will be working on client A. Wednesday I'm working on side projects. But I love having more brushstroke-style approaches to the days - I bet the creative juice compounds!
I just subscribed to your blog; I'm already excited for Wednesday!
Good thinking. Posting on the blog is also a great way to document your experience just like we do here at IH.
Exactly! And I picked up something new in a coaching session Tuesday that I'm really excited to write about. I'm like halfway through writing and already can't wait to hit publish.
