New extensions menu in Chrome based browsers.
As I'm sure some of you have heard, Chrome has introduce and is in the process of rolling out the new extensions menu. You can see and read about it here and here.
Personally, as an extension maker, I think this is a pretty terrible decision and really makes me reconsider how users engage with my addons. Traditionally, most of the UI has been tucked away in the popup linked to the icon trigger, however, with this change I have to educate the users and figure out how to keep the addon relevant in other ways than hidden in a new menu.
As a Chrome user tho, this is an obvious and welcome change to keep the 23748326498329 extensions from completely overtaking my url bar. They are nicely tucked away in a separate menu vs being in the burger / dot menu as before.
What are some of your concerns and takeaways from this change for you as an addon builder? Do you spend time adding and explanation or a walkthru to make it relevant to your users?
I think the extension menu is definitely useful from a user's perspective but from now on extension developers will need to inform the user how to pin their extension's icon somehow.
I'm currently tackling this in the on boarding page as a few users have already said they couldn't 'see' my extension's icon.
I am using it now and have been using for a few weeks. Makes no difference to me. Like the fact that I can get to
chrome://extensionsfrom the menu faster.
