Let's get one thing straight. If you're debating whether you should read this post or spend time with your newborn or kid...spend time with your kid!
Otherwise, keep reading.
I'm a father of two incredible children (ages 4 and 1), an indie developer (built Astound), and am tinkering with a new idea for an app that would help women prepare for child birth. I'm the builder, my partner is the advisor.
I'm looking for ~10 of you, who are willing to share with me (whatever you're comfortable with sharing) on how you prepared for labor (courses, books, apps, tools, social, etc).
Let me set the stage. My partner gave birth to our second child about 1 year ago. Preparing for the birth we did the following:
When I ask my partner today what helped her the most, her answer is:
mental strength, and a feeling of trust and security in herself.
You're going to be disappointed in me for saying this, but currently I can't offer you much for your time. Perhaps the response rate to this post is an indication for the need of another product, or the lack thereof in the space.
But, if I do launch the app you get lifetime access for free. Promise. It's stated publicly here.
But, there's no guarantee. So kinda risky. But hey, this is IndieHackers, right?
If you've made it this far reading the post, pause...big thanks!
Now, if you'd like to share your experience in how you prepared for labor, please do one of the following:
Thanks for reading this!!! You're an amazing parent!
Hopefully your kids (or apartment) are still okay :)
Cheers
Hey, cool idea. I can share my experience publicly and I'm interested in reading other people's experiences as well.
First labor for me and my wife, 5th month now starting. She's a MD and worked as obstetric dept. years ago, so she know everything she needs to (and she also doing the ultrasound checks by herself), while I've read a book about the father role and "place to be" during labor, delivery and first months. I plan to read more.
I'm massaging her when her back hurts more than usual, but she will begin to get professional massages soon.
We're going to the gym to keep active, but of course her schedule is now composed by lighter activities.
We don't know how it works with courses yet, thank you for mentioning that so I can ask her tomorrow XD.
Thanks for sharing @MatteoCaporale and congrats to you and your wife!!
It sounds like you're preparing in all sorts of ways.
The 2nd day of our workshop focused on the father role: how to support before, during and after labor. One important role I played during labor was taking full responsibility over everything other than child bearing, small stuff like packing bags, talking with hospital staff, not asking if she's thirsty...just giving her a glass, etc. So she could focus solely on your breathing.
All the best to you!
