💡Newsletter Tip - Increase link clicks in your emails

Hey guys,

If you are writing curated newsletter and want to increase the clicks on the link, use a different color for the links.

We used the same colour for both texts and links in the previous issues, but in this week's issue, we changed the colour from black (Text colour) to red colour.

This change improved our CTOR from 17.6 to 21.78 🚀 and our newsletter got 200 clicks this time

will be doing this with explodingideas.co thanks for the tip!

    1. 1

Love your website, subscribed to the newsletter.

Nice post, good to try. Curious about color chosing; as red usually is considered as stop / don't, green as go / do, yellow for cheap etc.. Have shareable knowledge about this as well?

    1. 1

We used red color because our brands colors are red and black.

Congrats, Karthik! I also set my objective to increasing the CTR of my company newsletter recently, and tested that out by implementing an email design system. It worked very well for us. I put together my experiment results in a playbook here: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/email-design-system-playbook

      Awesome, will check it out

  4. 2

ty i will use it very nice tips

    1. 1

Glad to know that, let me know if it works for you 🤗

Thanks for the tip! I have so far always used own large buttons, but you notice that these are partially overfollowed. Will test that times whether a prominent text helps

    1. 1

Buttons are good, but if it is a curated newsletter the email might look as a bunch of buttons.

  6. 2

That's really impressive trick, thank you for sharing. The question that I would like to ask you is, how can you growth the subscribers of the newsletter?

    1. 1

      These things helped us

      1. Cross promotions
      2. Content distribution on Social media and communities
      3. Lead Magnet

Congratulations on your successful experiment with changing the color of your newsletter links! It's great to see that a simple change like this can make such a big difference in click-through rates. By using a different color for links, you have made them more noticeable and engaging for your readers. Keep up the good work and continue to experiment with different tactics to improve your newsletter's performance.

    Thanks a lot Karthik

Pretty solid UX principle of making things behave as users expect, people are used to colored, underlined, and/or bolded text being links, and combining those works especially well.

    1. 1

Yeah, coloring or bolding words makes users focus on them and underlining makes them click.

  10. 2

We use plain text newsletter. Hyper links are usually already a different color by default ..no?

    1. 1

It depends. We use Mailerlite for editing and sending mails. In Mailerlite the links are not automatically colored with a different color.

Nice article thanks for sharing this article.

How do you track clicks? Is there a way you can differentiate between sponsored link clicks and other link clicks?

    1. 2

I have experience mailerlite, convertkit, and Substack. All these guys will give link clicks for each link individually.

  13. 2

Wow! Thanks for the tip. Will try this out in tomorrows issue. I read a lot on the internet and find a lot of interesting apps, ideas and related content. I figured this might be useful to others. If you had the time please give my newsletter a look and let me know if you had any tips.

      Awesome, share the results here.

      Will checkout the newsletter.

      1. 2

Thanks 🙏 . Just changed the colour of my newsletter and now the links are in red. Will let you know how it goes.

  14. 2

Whats a good ratio between open rate and click rate? Do advertisers emphasize one or the other?

    1. 1

IMO 40% and above is a good open rate but it depends upon the niche and how often you send. Having a good open rate helps attract sponsors , but overall the click rate matters more because that's how the sponsors can track conversions.

    Totally @Just_Karthik, great tip.

Couple of years ago when Revue was one of the first players in the curated newsletter game, we noticed highlighting certain links that seek attention actually showed results (clicks/ a bit of signups too) - acts a CTA.

    1. 1

      That's great!!

Also, please share the newsletter link if you are still running it? Would love to check it out

  16. 2

I already had colored links but they probably weren't vibrant enough, so just updated. Looking forward to seeing the results this next week!

Thanks for the great reminder to make colors pop! :)

    1. 1

      Awesome!!

Let me know whether it worked for you or not.

Hey thanks for the tip, Karthik!

I just started a substack newsletter two weeks ago and can implement this tip. Although mine is not a curated newsletter, I believe this trick can still help me to guide people to some other related content.

    1. 1

Hey @arthinkalmagazine, I want to start a newsletter too and don't know where to start - I would like to connect with you to learn more.

      1. 1

Hi! Sure, you can DM @arthinkal on Twitter for any help you need. But just so you know, I'm quite new to the whole newsletter business and my knowledge is limited for now. I honestly found Substack to be the easiest medium to start a newsletter as a beginner, especially because it's free and easy to use.

        1. 1

Thank you, I have followed you but couldn't send you a DM (Twitter Limits). Here is my Twitter @mustaphamushi let me know if you can message me.

  18. 1

That's pretty neat! I don't know if you have enough readers, but an A/B test might be the way to go to separate the effect from content and just the link color.

  19. 1

I've also found making links bold and increasing the underline thickness has also improved CTR.

  20. 1

Nice actionable trick. Is thebigbanglaunch.substack.com your newsletter? Are you interested in adding it on crossgrowth.io, a platform for showcasing and cross promoting newsletters, which I'm planning to release in the coming weeks?

    1. 1

We recently migrated from substack to mailerlite. And this is our new link: https://launchpedia.co/the-big-bang-launch-newsletter/

Yeah, would loved to add our newsletter to cross growth. Let me know once it is live
