I've been working on a side project (letsgopaintball.com) over the past few months in my spare time, which has been tough with how slow it's going.
I decided a few weeks ago that I'd take advantage of the holiday and take the week off to dedicate to finishing out an MVP.
I kinda see this as an opportunity to dip my toes into what full-time effort on this thing would feel like without losing my job, so I'm pretty excited.
Anyone else doing the same, by chance?
I've recently been tweeting pretty frequently as I work on things, so if you're interested in following along: @teejcodes
I've done this before, sort of. I quit my job upon finishing my MVP to try to sell it full time. It was a toxic job anyway, and I needed to get out. So I decided to take the opportunity to work full-time on my business.
Spoiler: it didn't work out.
I found that the advantage of being able to focus single-mindedly on my business and not worry about my day job was far eclipsed by the stress of the "swim or sink" situation I was putting myself in. It's no secret that your IQ drops by one standard deviation when you're living in poverty or just burning savings for something that may or may not pay off.
I did make remarkable progress (it's B2B for industry), generated tons of leads, but it wasn't enough. Even if I could close 5-10 customers manually (tall order), it still wouldn't be enough to pay for my living expenses in Los Angeles, CA. Had a one-bedroom apartment and luxury car, and I wasn't ready to give those up...
I ended up going back to the workforce after 3 months. Now a lot happier and sustainable building my product with a low-stress day job.
Now. If you're doing it over a vacation period, that's absolutely fine; your job is still there waiting for you at the end. I'd grind it out over 6-7 days and really try to finish it. And then take the last couple days off and really unplug: go do something fun like skiing or hiking or something. Celebrate your win. That's what I'd actually do -- get work done, and then get some fun in there too.
Good luck!
Thanks for sharing that - taking it as a reality check!
Definitely planning to take some R&R once I'm done with this push. There's no pressure to stay at this pace.
I am planning on working a lot Friday-Sunday next week.
I really like the idea though - good luck on the MVP!
Good luck!
Love it! Best of luck. I just quit my job... last day is the end of this month. I'm lucky to have the savings to spend a year or so bootstrapping my own apps and services. It's time to build our own dreams instead of someone else's!
Nice, hoping I will be able to do the same at some point! You have any ideas queued up yet?
I think I gave you a follow on the tweeters btw. Curious to see what you end up working on.
Thanks for the follow on twitter!
Just starting to look at feasibility, but it will be an app that helps you stay in touch with people. It's easy to let relationships with friends and colleagues slide. This app will keep track of interactions with your contacts and remind you when you haven't had any interaction with them for a while.
I'm terrible at keeping in touch with people... so this app is for my own benefit. ;)
BTW, I worked in Aurora (underneath the "golf balls" at Buckley AFB) for a few years. I miss the skiing!
Small world!
Well, cool - I look forward to seeing some updates!

Thanks, I really appreciate the advice. I'm going to learn a lot about how much I can push myself without it being harmful.
