In this article I discuss the reasons why you should not be ignoring no-code platforms, describe the pros and cons, and share how I used no-code platforms to solve real-world challenges!
One can't help but notice the prominence of no-code platforms. It seems like there is one launched every day. And, there are almost as many opinions about no-code too, ranging from “this is the solution to everything” to “I can’t take this seriously”. I, therefore, thought I might add just another opinion.
Before getting into the details, it is worth looking back in time as no-code is not an entirely new concept. Coding has been around since 1840 with the creation of the first algorithm by Ada Lovelace. The first hint of no-code was in 1981, with the publication of “Application Development Without Programmers” by J. Martin. You can check it out on Amazon, but I warn you, it’s not highly rated.
Probably the biggest no-code tool that everyone will know is Microsoft Excel, which has spawned an unquantifiable number of cottage industry solutions since 1985. Fast forward to 2003 and the launch of WordPress (written in PHP) that put website development in the hands of everybody. Today an estimated 75 million websites run on WordPress, more than 30 per cent of all websites. This scale has created a massive industry of plug-ins, customisations, themes, and products like WooCommerce. All worth around $10 billion (say compared to Google Cloud Platform revenues of $13 billion in 2020). This is significant and presents an awesome opportunity for creators and indie developers.
No-code tools are not serious solutions and will never last
Large vendors are also seeing the opportunity to get a share of the market. Microsoft has Power Apps, Google has AppSheet, and Amazon has Honeycode, all focused on application development. Microsoft and Google are also taking on the likes of Notion with Loop and Google documents respectively.
Having set the scene, we can now ask ourselves, why has no-code become so popular?

So, it sounds too good to be true? We’ll there are some drawbacks, let’s consider the obvious ones:

I appreciate this has been quite a bit of theory, so let's get hands-on and look at some real-world use cases.
Building a Landing Page and Validating an Idea
I have now built several landing pages using Carrd. Once the copy for my landing page was complete (there is an example of a skill that is needed, regardless of the technology being used) it took less than 30 minutes to build the page, include a sign-up form, link the sign-up form to my email automation solution (Mailerlite), integrate to Google Analytics, and publish the page. I also included a feature request form using Tally Forms, to collate feedback from interested users.
Building a Customer Feedback Form
This was simply done using Tally Forms. It took minutes to design the form, including some conditional logic. In this case, I ask the user if they would be willing to provide a product testimonial and if the answer is yes, they are asked for an email address. Customer responses are recorded on Tally and also automatically recorded on a Google Sheet.
Building an Information Product
I wanted to build a toolkit for project managers and business change managers and had several requirements:
I didn’t want to code anything
I wanted to provide more than just templates to my users
I wanted the toolkit to be easily extendable, by both me and my users
I wanted my content to be interactive by including video, images, hyperlinks, and business logic
It should be easy to distribute the toolkit
I settled on Notion and whilst the content took some time to produce, creating the product itself was very quick. I built a landing page, again using Carrd, listed the product on Gumroad, and that was it.
Building a Custom Integration
One of my online courses is hosted on Thinkific (I initially built my own platform for this using WordPress and OptimizePress but it was a massive waste of effort - this might be a post in itself!). Each time a user signs up for my course, I want to add them to an email list (Thinkific can handle email marketing, but the feature is costly). Unfortunately, Thinkific does not provide integration to Mailerlite. Enter Zapier. It took around 30 minutes to build and test an integration. Now, whenever a new user signs up for my course, they are automatically added to a specific list in Mailerlite.
Building a Back Office Solution
My side hustles generate revenue by selling several products, distributed via a number of channels. Tracking all of this in a Google Sheet got a little messy so I decided to build a tracking system using Airtable. Airtable is essentially a relational database but presented as a spreadsheet. I got a nice model setup, including currency conversion and then built a dashboard on top to highlight my best performing product/channel combination, best month, etc.
As you can see there are a ton of use cases for which you can use a no-code solution. In addition to the examples I have listed here, you can build fully-fledged SaaS products, widgets, add-ins, and other innovative solutions.

Very insightful. No code tools are definitely helpful and when accompanied with AI they prove to be a gamechanger. There is a report by Codeless One, Gartner, Microsoft, etc. on no code trends, which proves why no code is here to stay. It can save you a lot of time and effort. You can replicate almost every single business tool in 'Codeless One'

From a user perspective, it's a bit difficult to grasp the comparisons between Wordpress, for example, and no-code solutions like Bubble.
Having used them both, I really don't see them functionally as comparable as some people think.
I think nocode tools like Bubble, Appgyver, Softr.io and so many others are definitely here to stay and they have so, so many use cases, especially for internal tools and for MVP/early-stage product development.
I'm working with my team on using Bubble as a frontend solution and we'll see how it goes. Have my doubts still if nocode is mature enough to work for a larger type of platform.
But cool to see that people have replicated Uber with Bubble...according to what someone said here.

Yeah, I'm 15 years in software development and this is 100% true.
Current state of no-code is that you can build pretty much any MVP without software development.
You are in a low-code zone for first product.
And when you get to a first customers and you want to expand your product or save money only then you go to an all-code.
I predict in the next 5 years this will only go one step ahead towards no-code and we'll see first mayor scalable apps running solely in a no-code environment.

I think that it's wild that this has just become a topic. People have been building no code SaaS and Mobile applications with platforms like Build fire and WordPress for years.
Yes, the complexity of the platforms is limited but honestly, in most cases, that's what makes them great. Now that things have played out, almost all applications follow similar patterns unless you're dabbling in the AI/ML world.
For example, right now, you'd be hard-pressed to custom develop anything in Next, that couldn't be MVP'd in WordPress for a small-scale audience.
You take that MVP to market much faster than you ever would with custom development, allowing you to prove your concept and audience faster, as well as focus on the opinions and feedback of the audience sooner, allowing you to iterate and build for the audience faster.
The whole point of No Code is to get to market faster, bridge gaps faster, and improve the application lifecycle before making the commitment of scaling beyond No Code.
If you're an engineer and savvy with the no-code space, then you can create unique interactions much faster than normal. For example, learning how to write micro serverless apps and using no-code tool webhooks to process data in a unique way allows you to innovate beyond what others in the space may be able to accomplish.
However, in time, there will not be a need to scale beyond No Code, unless you're truly innovating with technology. The opportunities are endless, and being a founder today is more about being a creator than anything, it's time to just let your mind roam and be a hacker of your imagination.

What’s the difference between a no-code product and a traditional SaaS?
Well SaaS could be anything, for example Canva, Mailchimp, or Dynamics 365 are SaaS applications. No-code applications are platforms that allow you to develop software without needing to code.
I'm still a bit confused by this definition. For example, take "customer feedback form." You can build a customer feedback form with Mailchimp. And many other services, like Squarespace, allow you to develop websites without needing to code. But these are traditional SaaS businesses.
To me, a "no-code platform" is a SaaS that doesn't host your data, and integrates with third party services that specialize on data hosting, like AirTable or Google Sheets. So, my litmus test for a no-code platform is whether it's "BYOD" -- Bring Your Own Data.
I guess it can become a bit of a grey area. Broadly, I think we can define SaaS in the context of IaaS (e.g. virtual machines on the cloud) and PaaS (e.g. Azure SQL). Respectively, these provide infrastructure and platform. Whereas SaaS provides the software too. No-code platforms could be SaaS (think wordpress.com) or non-SaaS, think installing WordPress on your own Linux or Windows server. I don't think the distinction is whether or not the platform hosts your data, as solutions like Airtable, Glide, and Bubble have options to host your data. Hopefully this makes it a bit more clear.

What lead you to use Mailerlite? There are a lot of email choices and I’m not familiar with that one.
Great question. I was originally using Mailchimp on a paid plan but found that I could get exactly the same functionality on a free plan from Mailerlite. I did a bit of research before migrating and considered options like Active Campaign, Convertkit, Octopus, and Sendfox.
Ah… I used to use Mailchimp but then moved to Sendfox. It seems okay but I don’t know what I might be missing.
I did trial Sendfox, and thought that the once-off $49 was compelling. I just found the response times poor, e.g. after a new sign-up it would take up to 20 minutes for the autoresponder to send the first mail.
Low code is good for some work.

Super helpful, thanks! But why not just learn to code? I feel like i could learn that in just slightly more time than I could learn to no-code and it would be more useful long-term. No?
Some people just don't have the "brain" for programming. I don't. I am into design, writing, marketing, etc. I can learn almost anything. But programming just isn't for me. I learned a little BASIC when I was a kid, but I didn't enjoy doing it, and I hate math so I'd never be able to do advanced coding. No-code is a lifesaver for someone like me.
Not trying to sway you into the other direction at all, but I think equating math and programming is a bit of a misconception. You do not need to like or be good at math to code or "do advanced coding"!
Interesting. I'd always been told there was a lot of math involved. Maybe it depends on the language or type of coding? Not sure. I did successfully learn a bit of BASIC as a kid, and I learned a good amount of HTML years ago. Maybe I could try something soon.
I took many courses to learn how to code. Rails, PHP, Python, JavaScript, tried them all. I just couldn’t put it all together and make it stick. Then I found Bubble in 2015 and since then I’ve built dozens of apps including a SaaS I’m currently working on. Nocode just worked better for me and I haven’t been limited with any of the apps I wanted to build.
That is awesome and really testament to the great no-code products out there.
I think it's more than "slightly". Theres a lot of people out there with a computer science degree and 5 years development experience from a large government contracting company that still don't know what they are doing.
A lot of no- code solutions specialize in their area of expertise. They've put in a lot of leg work on specific problem spaces - if you were to attempt to rebuild a lot of the work they give you for free, it would more than likely be a very large time investment.
There's also this meme around "just learn to code" that's made its way around in the past few years. It's gotten propagated as languages like JavaScript have greatly cleaned up and gotten much more accessible with good tooling and support.
As a long time developer, as well as no-code enthusiast.. there's a lot that the "just learn to code" crowd doesn't realize. Once you move beyond building a basic React/Vue frontend and you have to start thinking about building a backend, how you deal with (and store) data, how you manage multiple different users, and security, things get far more complex.
A lot of these no-code platforms take care of this stuff for you, so that you can focus on more of the creative process and less on the very technical stuff.

Great question! I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. If you already know how to code then no-code platforms are a tool to accelerate your progress. If you don't know how to code, then no-code platforms are a good starter for your journey and can help you decide on where your focus needs to be, e.g. databases, front-end, APIs, etc.
