In my past projects, client side tracking has always been on my pre-flight check list. How else would I know how many people are using my product. What led them there. Where are they located. Did they goes through the nice little funnel I designed. How long they spent on each feature.
In hindsight, I cannot recall a single action I have taken based on the tracking data. The data you get after launching a new product is statically insignificant, and often misleading. It's too easy to confirm biases or amplify your own anxiety.
I recently opened up https://nums.app for public beta. And for the first time, I decided to go track-less. I want to see how far I can go without putting in a tracker. I'll keep everyone updated.
How do you understand/discover your first users?
I mean, I totally agree with you, tracking sucks. But, as a early-stage founder, you need to understand how customers use your app/website. You can still try to have interviews but it's pretty hard to get. You're not afraid to miss some infos?
My hypothesis is to do interesting work, make myself approachable, and let people reach out to me. I'm not there yet but I'll keep you updated.
