Nothing really lasts forever

When I decided to step back from the day to day running of Ministry of Testing I've kept it firm in my head that whilst I will do what I can to make it work as a business owner, it has to survive and thrive without me.

Luckily it is thriving. Admittedly current events are making me cautious, especially as a business that is 70% events based.

But I've done my best to live on as if it didn't exist. This is not because I don't care, more it's the opposite, I care so much that I have to let it be.

From my personal situation, I need to plan as if it didn't exist. I need to start over. Search for new sources and ways of making a living. No money I make anywhere is guaranteed to last forever, if it is cut which can happen for all sorts of reasons, the best we can do as indie hackers is to plan for it.

We're all guilty of chasing dreams. Imagining how perfect things would be, once we get there. That grass on the other side is always so much greener. But we forget what we could be doing today.

You only need to look back 5, 10, 20 years to realise how much the world has changed. So many businesses just don't exist. A good business a few years ago is not necessarily a good one today.

Then you need an economy crash like in 2008 or the fear that is currently setting in with the coronavirus to feel completely vulnerable.

When indie hacking, plan for the future of all parts of your life.

  • save some money
  • keep hold of businesses, or sell them, whatever you feel is right
  • be smart with your money, pay of debts, find other things that make sense to invest in (e.g. property, shares, businesses)
  • keep healthy
  • spend time on what is important for you

Love this Rosie. It is so true, things can change in the blink of eye in any situation of your life!. Do you work on different projects/ businesses so you are not putting all your eggs in one basket?.

And indeed, things have changed in a blink of any eye! This was all written before I even thought all about what is happening now with the extent of the coronavirus. :(

I have Ministry of Testing which I co-own now and provides an income.

Managing IH community is now my 'day job'.

This is plenty for me atm, though I do some coaching/mentoring/consulting and writing on the side.

@rosie this is awesome. It takes so much courage to let something you've created go out on its own. But like you mention above it HAS TO! if it can't survive without you then you've just traded one master for another!! Keep on Keeping on!
