Off-site SEO with Quora and "alternative to" pages

This past week, I have been working on "alternative to competitor X" pages for my startup Hopscotch - free product tours software for SaaS startups.

On-site

The way that I have been going about this is making a "competitor X" comparison page for each of the larger players in the product onboarding tours space.

In my case, those are:
Appcues alternative
Intercom Product Tours alternative
Chameleon alternative

Things I am focusing on:

  • Url structure
  • Page title and meta description
  • H1 and above the fold content
  • important keywords within the page like "affordable CompetitorX alternative"

Things to improve:
The content is kind of lacking - I need to fill these pages out with more meaty comparisons. Perhaps some gifs and images of each product will help as well.

Off-site

The next part I want to focus on is getting some inbound links to these pages. There are some answers on Quora that give me some easy ways to link back to them. I had some issues with answers being deleted since they link to my website, but after contacting support with an appeal, they were all overturned. More on that in my twitter post here.

Even this indie hackers post links to those pages. I am hoping these links can signal to the google gods that there are inbound links and in turn help the rankings. I don't have any proof on this - really I am throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks - but it's low effort... so I could either spend a week researching and thinking about it, or just go for it.

Circling back and measuring

As time goes on, I will continue to flesh out the pages and keep an eye on the rankings. Right now I am only checking in my google analytics and google search console to see the results. I may spring for a tool like Ahrefs to get some more detailed data to help me find more opportunities.

I will also continue to find inbound link opportunities and perhaps answer some additional Quora questions.

Wrapping up

I would love to know your experience with this type of bottom of funnel content. Anything that worked for you? Or anything that didn't? Let me know in the comments.

I love to share my journey and how I work. If you're looking for more bite-sized content like this, you can always find me on Twitter.

Cheers

Nice! Yeah I would guess that any backlinks like the ones you are trying to get would help. Can be hard to get those!
