Offering a physical object (a vinyl record) to promote an App.

We've just launched our "Pompom Vinyl" initiative to help promote our smart podcast-editing app — Pompom.

We wanted to do something noteworthy and with an incentive to share but still in line with our product.

We thought that a record is

  • unusual
  • invites taking a picture of it
  • is something you might put on your wall or in your podcast studio

More so than a CD or tape.

We're also hoping that it will catch the attention of some press as well (not to mention the indie hackers community).

Anyway, we've just launched so I'll be back with an update on how it does.

This is an amazing stunt! Let us know how it goes.

Thanks @gokceozantoptas. Early results haven't been great, unfortunately. So far it hasn't prompted anyone new to subscribe to annual. BUT we did get a rush of new users on the day we launched the campaign. We're doing some follow-up today but it seems like this may not be a great plan. It's cost us time, but nothing else so not a terrible loss.

I thought it would earn some media. Did you try reaching out to podcasting newsletters, tech websites etc? This feels newsworthy. Although I have to say, not everything that feels newsworthy is newsworthy.

Also, to initiate the virality, you may want to get these into some peoples' hands? As part of brand partnership? Not ambush them with this but just ask some big name podcast hosts if they would be interested in receiving something like this, free of charge, maybe with complimentary 6-month Pompom+ in exchange for some exposure? Its vanity feeling is very high, I'd think nobody would say no.

Sometimes, even stuff like these requires some push behind them.
