I'll be holding #office-hours via a Zoom call on Thursday at 1:30pm PST.

I can talk to you 1-on-1 about starting your business, bootstrapping/funding options, hiring, management, sales, getting your company acquired or other topics related to scaling your company.

(By the way, I'm David J. Phillips, co-founder of BloomJoy.com. I was previously co-founder & CEO/Chairman Hackbright.com where we bootstrapped the company before being acquired by Capella Edu for $18M. Before that I co-founded Ban.jo which has raised $120M in venture capital. I am an alumni of Y Combinator and UCSB. I'm a big fan of bootstrapping and have also taken the venture backed route, happy to share my opinions from my experience.)

    Hi David,

I'd love to chat with you about your experience building and nurturing a successful cofounder relationship.

You've obviously done so successfully quite a few times already, and I bet you've got some stories of mistakes to avoid as well.

I'm trying to find a way to help founders avoid the kind of cofounder mistakes that kill otherwise successful startups.

Happy to cover this during OH. Cofounder relationships are definitely hard! Lots of nuance, and each case is different. The most important thing is effective and very frequent communication. Start over communicating, and then finding right balance.

Hi David, thanks for this offer. My company has some traction but not growing quickly enough - product is good but I'm thinking we may be in the wrong market so would be great to hear your take on it. Thanks!

      Do you have a URL?

      1. 1

www.a5-tech.com (it's all in Japanese, sorry!)

        1. 1

          👍👍 no worries!

Hi David, I want to hear about all the stuff below. Thanks so much for sharing your time and knowledge! In addition, I'm knee deep in the trough of sorrow. If you have any insights into how you've approached setbacks and stagnation in your businesses it would be helpful.

    Hi David,

I'm launching with a free product, with a low-cost paid version as a fast-follow (and then laddering up-market). I'm working on the right triggers to move someone from free to paid. Is this something you'd be interesting in discussing?

Hi David. The url for my project is https://1brand.co

Hi David, I would like to understand how to spend the revenue generated at a bootstrapped startup without getting burnt out for right results. What are some key areas to focus and some pitfalls to avoid. This information would be of a great help.

Hey David, thanks for making time to help out the community!

Can we get a beta test feedback from you? We just launched theairchat.com and it would be great to get some gems from you. It's a voice only app community (Twitter for podcast).

    Thanks for setting this up!

    Hi David!

    Thanks for the awesome opportunity!

I'd love to get your insights on the key metrics to track and benchmark our current metrics.

I'd also love to get your insights on the best strategy to leverage our "beta momentum".

Hey David, it'd be great to get on a Zoom session. I'd like to discuss building an MVP, shipping a product, and applying for YC. Whatever we have time for.

    Thanks!

Hi David, I've seen your MVP and heard your pitch yesterday. Please look into Drift and Intercom, which call themselves as conversational marketing. However, we are using Drift successfully at our BearTax for interacting with customers and solving their issues.

It's a small code snippet you include in your code. Gives a chat box and a dashboard to respond to users. You get their email, which page they ping from and also allows you to write automated responses for certain questions. Allows you to create knowledgebase and it can respond automatically depending on the page the customer is.

Have a look at their website, articles and podcasts by Intercom - that could help you.

        Vamshi,

I appreciate your feedback! It was impressive to hear your business already has 4,000 customers. Congrats!

I actually noticed you were using the Drift app when you gave your demo yesterday, haha.

For Drift specifically, what would you say could be improved on? Or, what would you say is something that Drift isn't solving at BearTax?

I think that if I create my product too similarly to Drift or Intercom, then I will not see as great success in the market. I need to figure out how to differentiate my product.

Any insights you have would be greatly appreciated!

        Thanks :)

Hey Conner, good stuff to cover in OH! Depends on where you are starting from for MVP. Always best to start with the problem you are solving, coming up with the simplest version of a solution to that problem. What is the minimum amount of product you need to build to know if your solution is right? How will you know if your solution is right? answer these questions and build backwards. Shipping also depends but I generally think you should ship it as soon as you can learn something from it being in users hands (and it's at least kinda useful). Applying to YC is a great idea for all founders, I think. They accept companies at all stages and backgrounds -- there is no single correct time to apply. A great time to apply is when you have a core team of cofounders (at least) and conviction around the problem you want to solve, greatly helps if you have progress against solving the problem for customers.

How to crowdfund for a startup.

    1. 2

Hey Yusuf, great topic for OH. I think it really depends on the startup. Ultimately, the best source of funding is revenue. I think the best time to do crowdfunding is when you can kill two birds with one stone - funding for your company + customers (pre-sales), or + users (supporters of project), or + there's a potential opportunity to create some great buzz around your launch marketing (viral video or something). Crowdfunding is a skill alone and building a company + getting good at crowdfunding is hard and not worth it unless you can kill two birds with one stone IMO. If you mean equity crowdfunding, i don't know enough to give an opinion sorry.

Thanks for this @davj. It's so much appreciated.

Choosing the right tech stack to build on!

    1. 1

completely depends on your idea and capabilities. PM as I can suggest on that front on how to get started with lean setup and build your product.

      1. 1

@confusedcoin it would be nice if you can drop your suggestions here, I'd like to gain from your experience too.

        1. 3

          Definitely!

Jira - list everything down in your mind and make userstories.
Bitbucket/Github for private repo and coordinate.
          Front-end - react/vue/angular as per your convenience.
Backend - use any BaaS like firebase or write with mysql+nodejs.
Digital Ocean - $5 plan - simple VPS linux box, use as you like.
Cruip.com - for beautiful landing pages
          undraw.co - for opensource illustrations
Sendgrid - free tier for activation and communication emails.
Drift - free tier for customer support & lead capturing.
Mailchimp - free tier for signup forms, email campaigns.
          Stripe - for accepting payments.
IH for friendly & candid feedback and suggestions.
PH, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook for reaching out to more audience.

Again, completely differs based on your needs. But this is a simple starter pack to start lean and grow.

          1. 1

            Thank you @confusedcoin
