Hi all,
I joined indiehackers a few years ago, hoping to surround myself with peers having similar goals. Also to force some sense of accountability on my own life. And, as a certified "old" I am also very happy to help others with advice and experience I've gained along the way.
I'll hazard a guess that many (some?) of you reading this might be just like me... overflowing with ideas, chasing new concepts every week, starting out with a ton of energy and getting about 70% through dev and then... fizzle (because -- hey! squirrel!)
Well, I know I'm not insane (my mother had me tested), I figure that I just need a little focus.
So, true to form, four years after joining I am making my first post here.
And here it is. A goal. Or should I say "goals?" Out of all the ideas and thoughts I've been chasing, I am going to focus my pea little brain on just TWO of them.
FIRST: I have a game/app that I started developing about SEVEN YEARS AGO (the shame is strong with this one). It's playable now, and has been for several years. It's fun and everyone I've shown it to tells me that it's GREAT. So what's holding me back? A lack of experience in taking that FINAL STEP to packaging it up and releasing it in the app stores. Getting ads integrated so that the free version can also participate in generating coin. Also, I created it using Corona SDK (now known as Solar-2D-for-reasons-I-cannot-fathom-just-kidding), which may or may not be the best solution for creating an app. So, I guess, if anyone has insight or advice on this topic, that would be crazy good.
SECOND: One thing I keep coming back to is that -- while I am apparently blind when testing my own code (can I see some hands? anyone? anyone? Bueller?) -- I literally SHINE LIKE A SUPERNOVA when finding problems in other peoples' code and content. Which is impressive given that I am one of the few people on the interwebtubez who know the definition of the word 'literally.' So I have launched a new service (it's in beta now) whose sole purpose is to nitpick websites (and printed materials and books and product packaging) looking for everything from misspellings to JavaScript errors to design flaws to... well... you get it. If you are interested and you've read this far, I am giving away five free 2-hour analyses. Hit me up with your website or a link to your [packaging design|book|printed piece] and I will let you know if your content matches with my service. To be clear, this is NOT competing with the totally cool and amazing service roastmylandingpage, since that seems to be mostly about marketing and CTA and flow, etc. This is more about a little concept I've decided to call Embarrassment Avoidance as a Service (EAaaS)™. Don't launch your project with a website containing misspellings. Don't pay a commercial printer several thousand dollars to print product packaging with comical errors. Don't self-publish your book on Amazon without hiring a guy like me, who sees misspells and grammar errors floating above the page like some kind of magical beacon. Let me check it out, first.
Anyway, as I said previously, this is my first post. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
Here's my honest advice: Forget ads, forget marketing, definitely forget rewriting it in a different framework, forget release notes, forget everything other than clicking "publish" on the app store listing page. Guess what? It's not going to make a difference. This is 2021. Everything and anything can be added via an OTA update. Even multi-million dollar games have patches on Day 1. I'm sure your game will be just fine if you need to make some minor changes to it after it's been released.
Keep going, persisting for seven years with your game / app is something to be proud of :-)
Everybody starts at that point. Most app stores, frameworks and the good old StackOverflow have excellent advice on this. Check it out and just start doing it. :)
