Probably US indie hackers feel more than others since our healthcare system is a bit broken.
What’s your non-tech stack? What do you use for healthcare, accounting etc. how do you keep your burn low while you work on product market fit?
I bought a high-deductible insurance plan on healthcare.gov. I know there's a lot of FUD about individual health insurance, but since Obamacare, I actually think it's not any worse than group insurance (I had individual insurance pre-Obamacare and it was worse then because (a) you could be denied coverage and (b) there wasn't a centralized place to compare options).
I switched my company to a group plan earlier this year, and it appears cheaper for employees but only because the company pays for half. The total cost isn't actually any cheaper aside from possible tax benefits.
So basically, yeah, it'd be cool if insurance wasn't such a major expense in the US, but it is no matter what you do, so I'd suggest you don't stress out and just buy an individual plan and move on.
UHC has an awesome short term and secondary insurance selection. Stack it with critical care and you'll be set.
Mind you, pre Obama-care I could cover my whole family of 4 with a $2500 deductible for only $370 a month, we now pay $780, but it's better than the $1380 a month with a 25k deductible via healthcare.gov
what is UHC? is it available in all states? I agree the government websites show the prices as very high..
