Last month we launched our new Shopify app (https://apps.shopify.com/easypop).
It's been a slow roll but we're making some solid progress. After a month since launch here's a recap of where we're at:
- Pushed a bunch of new features and bug fixes - https://easypop.canny.io/changelog
- Up to 27 customers with $20 MRR (most on our $1 plan)
- A handful of Shopify Plus merchants have installed the app
- Getting a lot of good feedback (some discouraging feedback)
- Started to migrate customers from a previous app
- Tried using Shopify app ads (not working great for us - we need more reviews I think)
- Hired a writer to help with content/landing page
- Hired a salesperson to help with outreach/sales
In the coming weeks we'll be:
- Continuing to share progress/updates as much as possible
- Starting our blog/content marketing efforts
- Polishing off app design with Tailwind
- Updating app listing and landing page
- Launching on Product Hunt
Honestly a bit surprised at how slow things are going. Had to take a step back and reevaluate expectations. I know now this is going to be an uphill climb (especially since we're in such a crowded space).
Question for those building in public - where did you start sharing your story and how do you stay active? I find it difficult to stay consistent when there are so many different channels (Twitter, IH, fb, email, etc).
Congrats Thomas!! 27 customers in a month is great πππ
Thanks! I've honestly had a hard time telling myself that but I know it's great.
IMHO you should try and raise it to $3. If people are making money on Shopify, they won't feel the difference, if they don't, they are not your users anyway. So, no difference for them, 3xx difference for you.
On the second thought, it's not about the money at this stage but, rather, about getting feedback. So maybe just keep it at $1. This way, when you finally raise it to $10, it will feel really good.
Ya I mean I completely agree - I think the price is something we'll slowly start to raise. Right now I think we're going to move to standard pricing with a discount available for all.
The $1/month plan was something we only offer to specific people with a discount code so it's not publically available.
Great work, Thomas. We are about to launch our first Shopify app so definitely want to follow along with everything you learn.
Have you tried tweaking your App Listing at all? I've spent the last few days analyzing (probably over analyzing) app listing copy and keywords. For example - the Title and Tagline seemingly play a huge role in findability/discoverability in the app store. We plan on A/B testing these specifically on launch.
I looked into your category in SASI and it seems like much of your competition are using specific keywords in their copy targeting use that a merchant might be searching for explicitly.
Easypop | All-in-one Popups
On-site marketing made easy: upsells, shipping bars, and more
vs
Upsell Popup - Sales Pop up
Exit Pop-up, Newsletter & Email Pop-up, Cross & Upsell Pop-Up
Whereas you are branding as the "all in one popup", your customers are likely not searching for that and are instead searching for "email newsletter pop-up" instead.
This is just a hunch! This also assumes your primary acquisition channel is the App Store. I have no data to show otherwise just wanted to share the marketing analysis work I've been doing ahead of our Shopify app launch.
Good luck and keep us posted!
That's awesome - you'll have to share your app when you launch.
Haven't tweaked the listing since we live. Right now our organic traffic from Shopify is basically 0... it's kind of disappointing but we may have launched too soon without polishing off features more. Thankfully we have some existing clients/customers to give us a bit of a step forward.
I've been reluctant to lean too heavily into "search specific" messaging because I feel like our app can do so much than a few keywords.
Congrats Thomas - sounds like you're off to a good start - thanks for sharing. I'm curious, what was the thought process behind the $1 plan? Gain traction, get user feedback, iterate on the product, slap on some testimonials, then raise prices?
I think it's a bit of everything. 1) Wanted to give existing clients a great deal 2) Easy deal to get users onboarded for feedback/testimonials
Love it - looking forward to following your growth! Happy Hacking
