Open Source Content Review Site

I'm contemplating on creating a new content site and I might open source the development of it. The site would have reviews, filters and comparison, blog articles and a search functionality around a certain topic. (still working on that topic). I'm hoping to get most of my visits from word of mouth and SEO eventually.

The sites audience will be developers, or people who want to become developers. My thought process is that by open sourcing it I can get more of the core audience I'm targeting involved. The site will also have reviews and a community aspect, so having it open source might help with that as well.

I have a couple of problems I'm not sure of.

What should I do about monetization? I could add referral / affiliate links to the reviews, there is always patreon and donations, or maybe even selling advertising (if the site grew large enough). One day I could even see me offering a premium tier, or training. Would that be a problem being an open source project? The money would go first and foremost into paying for the hosting and any other bills the site incurred. My hope it would grow much more then that though.

The next problem would be to get enough people even interested to help contribute, I'm guessing I would have to go alone on it for a while, before I could build enough contributors who would help... Any advice on this?
