I also started with Open Source through Hacktoberfest. It's an awesome initiative and I only wish it happened more than once a year. My first contributions were minor ones, clearing up inconsistencies in the documentation, upgrading some of the outdated dependency packages, etc.

The other option is to look for easy wins in the issues section of the packages you use. If you can fix something or help the core maintainers by answering the questions of first time users, it's a huge help.

I wish you the best of luck in the open source journey!

Worked on QtJambi like 9 years ago, during my studies. Nokia bought Qt to have a cool framework for their cool new devices, QtJambi was basically Java bindings for Qt. Then MS bought Nokia and everything fell apart.

My first open source PR when I tried to uprade to the latest version of Laravel, then one old pakacge does not compatible, so i fork the repository on github then make a PR, the author of package acccept one day after.

I feel like " join the crowd" :D after many years using open source. and motivate me to looking for more issues to contribute.
