Open source self-hosted alternative to Chargebee?

I wrote this recently. There are a few open source options in there. Not a lot though...

The only real self-hosted alternative I've found is KillBill, and it's a monolithic FOSS Java nightmare.

If you're not set on self-hosting, ChargeOver is a much better alternative to Chargebee -- our experience with Chargebee was absolutely horrible, but the folks at ChargeOver were responsive and friendly, even though we didn't end up going with their product.

I was going to ask if they only reason you are looking for an alternative is because of pricing but then I actually looked at the pricing page and was absolutely shocked by the price. I might look for an alternative too. Then again they do seem to have a free tier for startups. To be brutally honest I do not believe I would trust an opensource alternative. Your billing infrastructure is the most important part of your application. It needs to not only be reliable it needs to not fight against you. The reason Chargebee exists is that people want to work on their product offering and not have to worry about your billing infrastructure. I do not believe there is anything as comprehensive as Chargebee that is open source.

KillBill is a Java based application. It's engine is so well built that It supports any kind of Billing Model.

But you should configure the KillBill Billing Rules using XML.

Further it has Rest API in place. Very well designed.

Even It has a Admin interface. But it's not at all as good as modern application. It's Just ok. Does the Job.

Both fit our business requirements. So we will (probably) choose Chargebee - for that ONE reason.

But, we were looking at ServiceBot and Stripe API, before that, which we like. But the 50k model is a strong motivator.

Thanks @dfltr for pointing out ChargeOver. Also - I prefer "self-hosting" too. Didn't notice that option. Also @kidino that link was very interesting.
