Opinion: Most people think they need a growth marketer when they actually just need a digital marketer.

Growth marketing should NOT be your focus now if:

  • you care more about sales right now and not fussed about repeatable sales; growth marketers are focussed on the whole funnel, not just acquisition
  • you are not OK throwing time and money at a few losing experiments; losers also inform your next steps, so it's crucial for some money to be spent at first
  • you have a super strict timeline to hit X conversions

You might just need a digital marketer if:

  • You already know a particular channel is crucial to X metric e.g Pinterest, you can hire an expert Pinterest marketer to supercharge your results. The growth marketer is not likely to know as much about Pinterest.
  • You need technical knowledge to run experiments within that channel itself. e.g Facebook ads expert
  • You want to just focus on demand generation or brand awareness for now

That said, more digital marketers today operate with a growth mindset within their specialisation.

What type of marketer do you need to grow your product?

Any thoughts or opposing viewpoints welcome.
