Opinion needed: what content for building in public on Youtube?

Inspired by “The Web App Challenge” blog by Nathan Barry I wanted to do a similar building in public thing but on Youtube. Mainly talking about design decisions (why this tool, why that approach), how I solved the challenges along the way, and also personal learnings, failures, or opinions.

I think for the consumer side of such content it is highly intriguing to be able to comprehend the development of a SaaS business in this way (at least it was for me when reading “The Web App Challenge”). And for the producer side, besides getting exposure of course, you’re able to connect with people on a more personal level, not company to customer, but person to person. So it’s not only about sharing numbers or performance charts but about sharing stories from the project.

Doing this building in public on Youtube was a hard start I must say. Making these videos, writing the scripts, talking into a camera was so much more challenging than expected. Now, around 15 videos and a lot of experimenting later, I’m struggling a bit with the direction of the video topics.

My question now - would you say (when you are interested in this kind of content) that you’re rather interested in the step-by-step and more “technical” documenting of such a project (e.g. “how I set up the database”), or in more broad and lifestyley stories (e.g. “how I manage my time with this indie hacking side project”)?

In the list of videos on the Youtube channel I started you can see that I played around with both directions but I am not sure what to focus on.

Any opinion is highly appreciated ✌🏽

I think you should do what you enjoy so you can keep the quality high while at the same time eliciting more insights from the audience and analytics. Maybe do a survey or something?

True, that's actually a very good point as well. it's easy to get lost in what you think people might want to see and then lose connection to your "true" way of doing things

Thanks for sharing that blog post that you used as inspiration! You mentioned about how to present the content - I like the technical side a lot and tend to lose attention when the context of the content is more of a glance over. But I come from a technical background so my opinion doesn't really represent the rest of the viewership.

There's youtuber who's goes by the name Hallden where he tends to not to be afraid to talk about the technical stuff but maintains that lifestyle theme video. Maybe he'd be a good template?

That's very interesting, thanks for the input. The video you linked has a bit of live stream vibes, also an interesting approach. There I wonder, however, if people stay on it since it is not very condensed. But it's got impressive >200k views. I'll definitely check his channel out more.

I think it's because his audience are drawn by his background and lifestyle but they stick around because they can relate to his journey when he vlogs his techinical journeys.

In the indie game development community, people do a lot of technical "devlogs" where they explain how they implemented a particular system or feature in a game. I find this stuff very interesting and inspiring for my own work. If you want an example of how deep these technical videos go, check out this video from ThinMatrix: https://youtu.be/uueB2kVvbHo

If you look at the other videos in his channel, he shares some "Day in The Life" lifestyle videos occasionally. I also watch these when they pop up, but if the channel were all made up of lifestyle videos I would lose interest. Another example of a channel that has this mix is devduck

So to answer your question I like the occasional lifestyle video, but I am more interested in technical videos.
