Hi Everyone!
Though our company manufacture many products, it's own, but due to spike in Covid-19 cases and some extra expenses, we are planning to outsource some parts from Japan. However, the main purpose of this outsourcing is to overcome the cost that's why we are confused between original and surrendered bill of lading.
If we go with the original bill of lading, then exporter would include the courier charges, and it could also be late. That's why our logistics department is suggesting the management to go with surrendered BOL option, but we have to pay the exporter in advance to proceed it. I am here to know is it safe to pay the exporter in advance, and what would be consequences if we get the damaged or faulty cargo? Or it is still negotiable with the exporter in case of any error?
On the other hand, the team members who are in favour of a surrendered bill of lading referring this article https://www.jluggage.com/blog/shipping/what-is-surrendered-bill-of-lading/ and claiming surrendered billing overcomes the risk if we lost the original bills. I also found articles like this https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/030915/can-i-have-more-three-original-bills-lading.asp and found that usually, consignee receives three original bills of lading so how we can lose all of them? Should we consider their loss as a risk? What are chances of non-delivery of BOL, especially if we hire any courier service like FedEx?
In short, do you think surrendered bill of lading are inexpensive and worthy in terms of speedy shipment? Also, can we consider telex release as surrendered BOL?
I would also like to know your international shipping experiences and what method do you usually prefer?
