Our PH Launch Stats and Learnings (We Went Viral!11!11!)

Hey IH,

As promised yesterday I wanted to follow up with some launch stats from our Product Hunt Launch of our Chrome Extension to add Transcripts to your YouTube videos

Stats

  • 5th Place
  • 274 Unique page visits
  • 10 Installs of the extension
  • 1 Sale
  • 3 offers to buy upvotes 😳😒

Learnings

  • A lot of people expect a product like this to be free for some reason πŸ€”

  • We have too much friction in the beginning because you have to add a credit card right away

  • Our sales are gonna come over time (if so) because the one flow we built from the beginning (transcribing new videos) heavily depends on people actually uploading videos over time, so it depends on their schedule when they will convert to paying users

  • We watered down the number of people that installed the extension by linking both to the website and the chrome extension, a lot of people got stuck on the website and didn't go to install but at the same time, they could educate more on the benefits of the solution so it might not all be bad, hard to tell without being able to test this :)

Action Items

What?

Add the option to add transcripts to existing videos (different flow in the chrome extension entirely)

Why?

People can try it out immediately before they upload their next video

What?

  • Add some sort of free trial (e.g. transcribe 1 video for free before adding your card)

Why?

Reduce the time people need to see the value of our solution, credit card upfront makes the TTV (time to value) longer.

What?

Introduce subscription offering

Why?

This will reduce our stripe fee and we can bring down the price considerably.

Conclusion

Launching on PH is always worth it, even if you don't necessarily find a lot of people, it gets the ball rolling, ideally, you'll get some actionable feedback and it will help keep you motivated.

We know that the installs aren't super amazing but

Thanks

Thanks to everybody that supported us yesterday, I can't see who all upvoted for some reason so I can't thank everybody personally but if you let me know in the comments I will follow up with a personal note πŸ˜›

I do remember seeing wicked king @Michael_Andreuzza, so cheers mate :)

    This is so helpful, thanks!

I am still a bit afraid of product hunt, so reading other team's experiences is very encouraging.

I feel the same every time, I would say it's quite normal.

You just don't know how people are gonna react to it but, if it's polished enough etc but I'd argue that PH is probably one of the more encouraging communities so there's really nothing to be afraid of πŸ€™

      Unlike some others 😁

    That's really amazing Stefan πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺ

Of course man, you deserve support!

Well, I actually learned that we shouldn't make free products, just because they expect so in my opinion you did right.

We actually have a free flow on the website but it's much clunkier.

Yeah, I don't really care much, all the subsidized VC stuff just made people think it should all be free but if you're trying to compete for price you're gonna have a bad time but I'm used to it from the consumer apps I used to work on (in a previous work life :p)

Offering a free trial for us is just to reduce friction during onboarding, the rest will sort itself out :D
