Our Podcast Numbers SO FAR!

https://productjourney.fm/

I wanted to share our numbers with Product Journey podcast so other podcasters in a similar situation know what to expect.

We have really enjoyed creating the podcast so far! It has helped us get connected to people that we wouldn't have! We have started around 5 weeks ago and we have 5 episodes out so far.

Here are the numbers!

  • 124 total downloads
  • 12 subscribers (Transistor has to kind of guess this number)
  • 38 downloads on our most popular episode

Have in mind that we are starting this out with no network at all! We don't have many followers on Twitter and we are just getting started. It is cool that you can see from the graph that there are more downloads on the day we release (Monday). So there are a group of subscribers that are listening to this every week!

My first thought is that this does seem like a hard medium to get going compared to something like Youtube which I have some experience with. There seems to be less share-ability in Podcasts and less new listeners from SEO.

I think it will just take time for us to get things going!

We are starting to do cross promotional content with other podcasters which I think will help!

If you want to check out @benmann and my podcast you can here! https://productjourney.fm

I love seeing this influx of bootstrappers sharing their journey (in real-time) on podcasts. It's awesome.

I've often said that @jonbuda and I would do the Build your SaaS podcast even if no one was listening. Why? Because just the act of us getting on a call every seven days is worth it. We review the week, confront hard issues, explore struggles, and celebrate victories.

We've had lots of other folks sign up for Transistor to do just that.

On the topic of numbers, if your goal is to grow your listenership, there's only one way to do that: produce a compelling show that people talk about and share with their friends.

@brhea and @benediktdeicke discussed this in the last 10 minutes of their most recent episode.

People listen to podcasts because there's something compelling them to. They want:

    • entertainment
    • motivation
    • to be moved
    • to be inspired

Growing a podcast audience takes time. Generally, it takes a good podcast about a year to build a sizeable audience, especially if you don't already have a following.

"Success comes from persistently improving and inventing, not from persistently doing what’s not working. We all have lots of ideas, creations, and projects. When you present one to the world, and it’s not a hit, don’t keep pushing it as-is. Instead, get back to improving and inventing. Improve or invent until you get that huge response." – Derek Sivers

I'm cheering for you; keep showing up, and keep improving!

Thanks @mijustin! We're definitely trying to pull all the right levers! And play around with whats working and not.

I listened to that Slow and Steady episode as well. Really good things to think about!

Thats really helpful to know the time frame that it takes to get a podcast going! Helps give me the right expectations. Love it when you share your experience with podcasting on Build Your SaaS as well. Really helpful!

We want to keep on keeping on so we can continue to support you at Transistor as well!

Nice. Another helpful bit of info comes from Edison Research: How do people find new podcasts to listen to?

        • Searching the Internet (73%)
        • Social media posts (67%)
        • Recommendations from Friends/Family (66%)

☝️ Optimizing for those channels is your best bet to grow your listenership.
