During the last week we wrapped up the final steps to rename our startup from XD2Sketch to Magicul.io. This seemed like the right move given that we started out as an Adobe XD to Sketch/Figma converter but ended up developing multiple other products for UI UX designers on top.
We've always had magicians 🧙 as our theme, so I felt like giving it the new name "Magicul" was a decent pick. We bought the domain https://magicul.io and sent out a newsletter letting our existing customer know about the name change.
All seemed to be going as planned until this email popped into my inbox:
"Hey folks,
While I understand that you guys probably hope to operate primarily in English, I think it needs to be mentioned that your brand name "Magicul" in french, literally means "Magical ass" 🍑... but the real kicker is the .io of the domain, which literally means input & output...
So here goes the bad news... The entire french community is reading your brand name - literally - as: Magical ass (dot) in & out.
And then there's the logo itself... which is a hole with a hat.
Christ. You can't make this stuff up. This is ugh, umm, a brutally unfortunate brand?...lol
I'm in Quebec, Canada, where french is dominant and so I'm keenly aware of this - and so are my partners, colleagues and friends. We all had a good laugh.
Don't know what else to say...?
Bonne chance mes amis!
Have a good one,
I guess we didn't see that coming 😖, but as they say "there's no such thing as bad publicity".
Especially the io part is hilarious, given that our main product is literally a converter that takes files in and spits them out.
By this point it seems like we've already committed too much. Our target audience are mainly UI UX designers, which thankfully is a very easy going audience. I can't wait to see more comments on this.
Anyhow, if you wanna checkout our site here we go: https://magicul.io, we work on tools for UI UX designers.
That did give me a good chuckle. I don't think it's that bad though. Kinda reminds me of me of a less horrendous version of that designer that took it upon himself to redesign the worst logos ever created.
Haha, thank you for this.
Speaking of funny names for UX tools:
If you say "Figma" out loud, it sounds something like "Wanna fuck?" / "Let's fuck!" in German. Guess you encountered that as a German as well 😄
Always wondered such a heavily-financed company never cared for that.
And, on a side note as I checked your site:
I've co-founded a German prototyping & design tool called Antetype.
I'm seeing a opportunity for both of us there.
Drop me a message if you're up for a new integration!
Update title to: Renamed my startup to Magical Ass 🍑 by mistake
You'll get more views 😂
slightly unrelated question. How have you managed to get google as testimonial? Have they just used your tool at some point and contacted you, have you been in exchange with them or how did it happen?
Be honest.
You absolutely knew what you were doing...
;-)
As a french guy, it made me laugh ! That's cool if it brings you attention!
You know, even big corporate like Audi did this kind of mistake, their new car is branded "Audi e-tron", "étron" meaning "💩" in French 😂
Hahaha, really funny!
It reminded me of a company called Bosta, which is literally poop in Portuguese 😂
Damn, that made be burst out in laughter 😂.
Someone also emailed me when I rebranded from userTrack to UXWizz, mentioning that "to go for a wizz" in US is usually when going for a pee, so using "wizz" at the end of the word might seem like a bad idea.
That being said, there are other companies using it (Wizz Air) and from what I was aware off, it is also often used as "computer wizz (or whiz?)", or as a shorthand from wizard or someone really smart.
I think if you try hard enough, any word is an offensive word in a different language. "Magicul" in Romanian means "the magic (thing)", which is pretty cool.
nobody can see it coming !
No publicity is bad publicity but this is funny af 🤣🤣
I'm French and the name is quite funny.
But you shouln't be too worried about it.
In US, there is a company that provides restaurant delivery called LAbite. In French it literarily translate to « the dick ».
I'm not an UI UX designer, but your product seems very solid
Funny story and really cool SaaS!
Funniest thing i read all day!
Was it really a coincident?! :D
Good luck!
This IS funny—and I think you can lean into it with some clever advertising if you specifically target French UI and UX designers. Like:
"We're Magicul.io. Did we get your attention? Good. ..." (all in French, of course)
Sounds like a great match. From one magical ass format (input) to another (output).
:)
😂😂😂
That's why even if you get a new product name that you think would be cool, you should do some research before you opt for it because what means something for you could mean something totally different in another language so you should be careful with that Kev.
Cheers!
Haha sorry, I couldn't help but laugh at the story, but I definitely think it can even be beneficial, maybe one or another referral will come thanks to this.
I laughed 😂
Aside from giving French-speaking UI/UX designers something to laugh about when recommending your service, I don't think your name will cause much of a problem.
In fact, I think that just such a story will help the name to be remembered and that's exactly what you want to achieve.
Oh man, that gave me a good laugh indeed. Unfortunate but hey, you learned something 😅 thanks for sharing!
Unfortunately hilarious! Reminds me of the AirBnb logo change a few years back!
