hey friends!
This is more of a family project than anything else some would say it's just e-commerce, some will say the niche is not worth it to which I say It's fun working on a project with your family.
My father is a Swiss watchmaker and part of his current business has been giving tours of his workshop, explaining how watches work and offering people to build their own custom Swiss watch in his workshop in Switzerland along with his guidance.
Obviously this year wasn't the most busy at his workshop - Actually one of the quietest since a long time.
One thing that my father has been really missing lately is simply having a contact with others and teaching - transmitting his watchmaking craftsmanship is at the core of his passion.
I decided to get involved and we discussed the idea of make available unassembled Swiss watch kits that are easy to build and that could be assembled from home. We would provide everything needed, a video tutorial, explanation about the watch, the tools, and the whole assembly process.
....few months later....
We splited the work, made a website and got out first sale! Wouhouu! We're far from saying that the business is flourishing, but it's a start!
Most of the posts here talk about tech, recurring revenue and this is also why I'm quite curious to hear what are people thoughts about watchmaking and our idea.
Here is the link to our website : https://6-12.ch
We still have progress to do in many areas, but I'd love to hear your thoughts about our idea and maybe how we could improve it.
I'd consider making a YouTube channel. There probably are lots of folks who would enjoy watching how watches are assembled. And I don't see why some of them wouldn't buy your kits after watching a video or two.
That's for starters. YouTube is weird. After a while, that channel could become your main business. But even without that, it could be a nice addition to what you already have.
Nice website btw 👍
Yeah, I agree. Was thinking along the same line, too. YouTube would probably a big hit with this kind of content.
Indeed thats one of the idea I've been looking into.
We already have content like video assembly instructions that we could make public.
Wow, that's a really neat idea. Do you already have a channel up?
Hi Kevin,
That’s quite cool. Despite working in tech, I grew up building LEGOs so for me anything that you can build with a kit is awesome.
I do think it’s an idea with potential, especially given that some of us have more free time at home due to the COVID pandemic.
