Hey,
Just wanted to share a piece of a story that happened to me while building Unleak.
At launch, I offered a 14 days trial period, like most SaaS out there.
Problem is, my product is used by developers. They want to integrate it right now, but they won't use it in production for a couple of weeks, they said.
So I increased the trial period to 30 days.
Apparently, that was still not enough.
At this point, I was telling myself that these customers were just not interested in my product. I talked to a bunch of them, and I realized two things:
The length of the trial made them think about the optimal time they would signup to the product, so the trial period would be used to integrate my product with theirs. And they kept pushing the signup can down the road.
I did a very bad job at onboarding them, so when the trial started, they felt a bit overwhelmed.
I went back to the drawing board and really thought about it. Increasing the trial further would not make sense.
And then it struck me: just give your customers what they want.
So I decided to put my product FREE forever, as long as you are in test mode. When you switch it to live mode, you start getting billed.
I also came up with a completely revamped onboarding experience.
My previous signup -> onboarding completion rate was horrible (9%) because I prompted people to connect their Stripe account as the only onboarding step. Most bailed out at this point, not understanding why I would ask that.
With that new onboarding experience, I multiplied by 5x the completion rate while asking for their credit card. How? I think I do a better job at explaining 3 things:
So far, this is awesome. I can't wait to get results back as to the average time before I start billing my clients. My guess is that it won't be longer than 30 days.
Now, how did you overcome your potential customers' objections?
PS: If you are curious about the new onboarding, or would like to provide me with feedback, I created a video of it: https://www.facebook.com/unleakio/videos/2156563527950934
PPS: Yes, I created a facebook page just to put that video up. :|
Untill you have 50 customers you can't take any positive or negitive feedback seriously. If you make changes from a few customers feedback, you will fail. Your job is to please the majority, not the few that complain.
100% agree with that. You are as much defined by what you don't do as much as by what you do.
I waited until I had enough customers to take the feedback seriously, but in retrospective, this was the same feedback as to when there were only 25 of them.
You need to constantly listen to your customers, but that does not mean you get to say yes to everything ;-)
Cheers!
Your post motivated me to watch this video/article from danmartell.com that had been sitting in my inbox.
Thanks, great video!
I think that I could have easily fallen in the trap of thinking the problem is the price and lowered my price.
In my case, this was really a "Not a now thing" kind of objection. Even though potential customers are not ready to pay for my product yet, I figured out that I still wanted to onboard those customers right away because the underlying problem was really a timing issue. The product is not too pricey, but they don't want to pay for it while they are integrating it into their product. That's fair. You should not pay while you learn how my product work, I get it :)
@dominic very interesting product. We just got through writing the billing for in app purchases for our desktop application so I completely understand the pain point you solved. Could this work for a desktop application?
Thanks @CoTT!
Unfortunately, the product is currently only available for web applications.
Next step is making it mobile friendly, then integrating with HTML/CSS mobile/desktop apps. I don't think it will ever native mobile or native desktop apps.
Nice video, and sounds like a useful service! What did you use to make the video? I really want to have a video intro to my app instead of just screenshots :)
Thanks Andrew! I used the new tool in MacOs that captures video instead of screenshots ;-) Cmd+Shift+5
I did not had to edit it though, but I am pretty sure you could do something decent with iMovie.
Haha got it. There are fewer options in Linux. I'm sure there's an easy browser-based option. Just thought I'd ask :)
I acknowledge the fact that the entire world does not run on MacOS, but meh 🤷♂️
I love your way of explaining things!
Commenting so that I remember to watch the video tonight :P
Thanks Veronika!
