Paid Newsletter: Ghost, Substack, or SES?

Hi all! I'm stuck in analysis paralysis here to determine which route to go for the paid newsletter that I am building.

I'm looking for:

  • custom domain
  • landing page for sign ups (this will likely be the only page on the site)
  • custom email templates
  • bonus points for: ability to edit and send newsletters from a mobile device and/or my emails won't get sent straight to spam folders.

I am a software engineer so if one option requires more tech skills than the other that's totally fine. I've read up on both ghost and substack and am leaning towards ghost. I've also read a bit about Amazon SES...has anyone gone that route? Please share (or dm me) if so!

Hey there, I hope this doesn’t come across as spammy, but here I go 😅 :

I’m working on an Open Source app for sending email newsletters. I’m currently looking for people who want to give it a try and give me some feedback. If you’re up for that, let me know :-)

Not spammy at all. I appreciate you sharing an alternative that I didn't know about and therefore hadn't considered!

If you are a dev, I would recommend :
    App to install : Sendy/Mailwizz
SMTP : google suite (depends of your daily quota), or ses. If you are ready to install a SMTP on your server, so you can check on github mailinbox or postalhq

You might be able to use Sendy then.

Oh I forgot about Sendy! Thanks for this!

Yeah, you might be right on the shared IP issue. I saw that you can get a dedicated IP but it's $24.99/mo. Which might be more than I would need just starting out.

May I ask why you're going the substack route? Is it just for simplicity or does it offer something that ghost doesn't?
